I'm bleeding!
« on: November 03, 2006, 05:19:22 PM »
Anyone use some of the emergency fast clotting agents?  I was always concerned about a bleeding injury out in the willy-wogs...

In a fix, you could always use what indians and mountainmen used, a handful of tree moss with some mud mixed on it.  ;)

I've heard that cayenne pepper powder directly on the wound can clot fast and restrict capilaries, but I wouldn't bet on just that. I like having a big triangular bandage in my first aid equipment. You can use it as a pressure dressing, or in a dire emergency as a tournequit (but you might loose the limb with a tournequit). Never tried or purchased a purpose made clotting agent.

super glue.  just wipe the wound quick, hold it close, and apply liberally.  Its super glue, so itll dry fast and hold hard.  Though it works, you do have to worry about infection, so if the wound is anything big, make sure you get it checked.

A friends brother was helping his father putting some roofing on, His father sat his hammer to the side and it slid down the roof and literly stuck in his head and fell out, There was an stream of blood as big as your thumb. They all thought they would loose there brother that day, His mother ran out with a bag of sugar and used it and a towel, 110 miles per hour to the nearest hospital. about 15 miles, he surived thanks to the sugars clotting abality.

When I served in the Army, every soldier carried a pressure dressing! simple and compact, they are available on the surplus market, Todays soldiers carry even more! The pressure dressing is a thick rectulangar bandage with laces sewed on tho hold it tight!

We have a coagulant powder that we use on livestock. It does work, it makes the blood clot quickly. However in the event that you apply it to a wound that is bleeding badly, it clots the blood that it comes in contact with then the new blood lifts it like the giant scab it is and continues to bleed. With some direct pressure it would help though.

I have never used it on myself nor do I have any desire to do so. However I wouldn't be afraid to do so if I needed it.

Don't know about CELOX.  Do know about QuikClot.  I have 3 pkg of the old and 2 boxes of the new ACS sponge.

Depending on the size of the wound you'd use one or more.  I also carry a couple rolls of vetwrap. (It's identical to the stuff for humans and much cheaper).  I carry Israle dressings, I carry 4x4s.    The old fashioned field dressing and on vetwrap will take care of most severe cuts.

Depends on how bad you expect to be cut.

I'll second the super glue.  We have used it on livestock and ourselves before with no problems.  It's original intention was to replace stitches and some hospitals will use a glue instead of stitches.  I carry a couple of tubes in all my emergency gear.  As stated though, be sure the wound is clena if possibe before using, otherwise, once you get to the hospital, they may have to open it back upto clean it out.  If it is a matter of bleeding out in the woods though, I'd rather use it and stay alive and deal with the rest later at the hospital.  We have also used the vetwrap both on animals and ourselves.  It will hold a bandage where you put it and will conform to most any location.  I also carry a roll of it in my emergency packs as well.

I just read in wikopedia the other day that the puffball mushrooms can provide a clotting action if you take the pores (when they are in the spore puffing stage) and apply them to the wound.  I dont know what the infection risks may be since you are basicly cramming fungas into a wound but I guess if it is a bad wound, stopping the bleeding has to be the first concern.  I discovered this when checking into eating the puffball mushrooms.  They are edible in the early stages but after trying them I dont recommend them unless it is a survival situation.  Even with a lot of seasoning, I couldnt get them to taste worth a darn.

Just found you guys and had to jump in on this one.
There is a lot of Quick Clot out on the civilian market right now as surplus from Iraq and A-stan.  Be really careful with this stuff and, if you actually use it, expect 2nd and 3rd degree burns at the site of application.   I have a lot of time spent on bleeding wounds and prefer good, old fashioned pressure to anything else.

Wow, good info, Recondoc!!

I once had a badly bleeding (but not really serious) wound on my hand.  An old Vietnam medic grabbed my hand and dumped a bunch of SUGAR onto the wound, which quickly absorbed blood, and hardened into a crust!  It wouldn't have done for a situation where I needed to keep moving, but in a pinch, it was nice to stop leaking!

I recently overheard a lecture on combat meds from an Iraqi contractor (former military medic), and he was all about pressure, even including tourniquets.  He said that the fear of tourniquets that's drummed into us from first aid classes is overdone, and they're very reliable lifesavers.

I look forward to absorbing Recondoc's web info...  Thanks again.
