coyote kills by the numbers
« on: November 04, 2006, 02:04:36 PM »
80% the # of antelope fawns killed by coyotes in one TX study.
86% the # of white tail fawns eaten by coyotes in an Oklahoma reaserch project.
5 out of 9 the # of successful kills of adult deer and elk by coyote packs in yellow stone national park in 1995.

this is where we need to go to hunt deer.

I was glad to see Illinois at number 3  ;D This is a good reason for the sucess of my( handgun only) hunts the last two consecutive years. I sure do hate seeing them on the highway though as they tear up our newer plastic vehicals beyond belief. :o

Our DNR recons a 10% loss of the fawn crop due to those Coyotes but claims that the Coyote is not an effective predator for adult deer in the same breath.
The story of the trail seems to be different though. It appears that they have mastered (funneling) techniques of running a deer down into a deep part of a creek, or even running it uphill to a gully pocket caused by rain run-off and being able to catch and finish them off.
I also know of a place where deer are funneled into a very thick V shaped hedge patch of multiflower
rose and other fauna and remains are found right at the inner point of the V where the deer is slowed down.
This is bad enough to begin with but may get worse as the Wolves are starting to filter in.

I can believe the coyote kills. I have watched several doe / fawn groups going down a couple trails this year and in most cases I saw a coyote or two sniffing down the same trail within an hour. Where the does stopped and grazed off of the trails the coyotes also wandered off of the trail.

I've shot one this year and would have shot more, but it was still early and I was still hoping for a buck.  :)

I like to call 'em and shoot 'em myself but calling and shooting is the least effective manner in contolling coyotes.  I lived in Okla for almost 20  years and it was legal to call them, dog 'em, poison 'em, airplane 'em, round 'em up on 4 wheelers, trap 'em, and anything else you could think of.  The DNR would tell you that the coyote population was very stable.

East of the big river, there is a whole lot of meaness blamed on coyotes that is really people's poochy dogs running loose at night.

No disrespect intended to anyone, but I don't agree with the coyote propaganda. I believe people come up with stats just to justify government hunters getting pay checks.
If you believe all the stats you see fine, but I sure don't. I can tell you this much and it's a fact. Coyotes get the blame for alot of things they don't do.

Sorry kyote,  had to speak my piece, besides maybe it well keep your post going ;) ;D kyote, did you notice none of those states are out west? Interesting.

one coyote, this info came from the american hunter a NRA publication.I put it here for folks to read and draw their on jump to conclusions.

there was a study done here in N.M.several years back(ask Doc)on spring antalope (the new ones being born) they used some kind of military thermal imaging stuff the goverment loanded them.made a count over a large area.several months later not one antelope was alive.( the new born)when they (the studiers)went to the ground to find out what had killed them all..it was detrimend that the chupa antelope killed them all.(Coyote)there ain't no chupa antelope.ask the Fish and game guys when they are in your area.
I think you are correct that coyotes get blamed for a lot of things today. But on the other hand..they have gotten smarter.they are nothing like the coyotes of yesteryear.there are tons of them around here.it is hard to bring them in.the dumb ones come a runnin.while the smart ones hang back trying to stop the ones that are coming to the call.
and as humans ancroach on their areas more coyotes will be blamed for the actions of loose dogs and cats and even what humans do and leave the dead animal for the coyotes to clean up.

The NRA is quoting other studies. They are not taking into account that the animals could have already been dead when the coyote started eating on them and that is what happens in most cases.

80% the # of antelope fawns killed by coyotes in one "Texas study?"

86% the # of Whitetail fawns eaten by coyotes in an "Oklahoma study.?"

My question is what is the number (#) killed, funny how they just happen to leave that part out? 86% of what number ??? ??? ???

koyote, I know you are putting it on here for others to read and that's a good thing. I'm just giving them another view, something to think about  is all. :)

I agree, and the more we talk coyote the more we learn, other input to the subject is allways great.

I was at ft.bliss today talking with the game department.they showed me some photos that they had just recieved of a brown bear, large one.that was in an area where humans had done a little development, the bear dug up an underground electrical wire.and bit it.his mouth was fried and the charge came out(grounded out) his rear foot.I remember we used to use special grease/oil to pull cable and even lube outside cable and when we did it would attrack bugs and they would eat the stuff.I am wondering if some one used a fish base oil for lube?what a waste of a great looking bear.

I saw a show on National Geographic that studied Coyotes.  It was prompted by the documented case of Coyotes killing a human.  A little girl in L.A.  county.
In the study they determined that when the hunting/trapping pressure on Coyotes gets too high they somehow start to have bigger litters.
I brought this up with an old guy I knew who was a Gov trapper in Nevada.  He used that poison that is now outlawed.  He said that is the only way that anyone will ever eradicate Coyotes from an area.
I live in a rural area in Ks. and see them quite frequently.  A lot of the locals shoot them, they are big around here.  I would like to also get into it, but the local fur buyer around here is not in business any more, and I hate to shoot anything and just let it lay.

There are a number of furriers you can ship your furs to but, until you find our if the furs are any good. It would pay to find what they are bringing before you sent any. I have in the past sent hundreds of coyote and bob cat, and fox to different furriers depending on which ones were paying the best prices. If the hides are rubbed or have mange you might as well leave them lay. You would be doing the country good either way. Good hunting and good luck.........Joe............
