H&R Topper 148
« on: November 05, 2006, 02:54:17 AM »
I recently purchased an H&R Topper 148 and cannot find the serial number on the frame.  I've looked about everyplace I can think of, without removing the stock, with no success.  Where should the number be?  The gun came with 30/30, .410 shotgun, and 22 Remington Magnum barrels (all for $100), and is exceptionally nice--no rust, bores are all bright, and the wood isn't dinged up.

I would like to find a 357 magnum barrel to add to the collection, but right not the serial number is my big question.

Can anybody help?

Thanks,

Pat

Well...if it isn't on the frame anywhere..you might try under the stock...The Toppers have been around since 1948..and if it is a pre-68..it may not have one for it...

Hello pcox, welcome to the wonderful world of Handi-holics and GBO.
The serial number should be under Pat NO . Does any of the barrels have numbers
on them. if any have letters in front serial numbers I would like to know what
they are? I would like to date some of the models Thank you Marv.

The 410 barrel is maked with a "P"
The 22 Rem Jet is marked with "4031"
The ".30-30 CAL. WIN" is marked with "3172"

No serial marks on the frame.  Thanks for any thoughts.

this is a 148 MOD SO IM ASSUMING IT HAS A SNAP ON FOREARM...???? the 148 are a old mod....no safty on firing pin   <thats a good thing in my opion>...is it a lever that moves sideways to break it open??? some of the OLD h& rs were this type???? the new one have the lever you push down beside the hammer...  im betting you have a older <BEFORE 69 model>nothing wrong with them i got one myself.....the 357 would not be a problrm for your action but you might have a hard time finding a older snap on forarm type......but just buy a forarm to fit the screw type and you will be ready to go.........jb

Yes, the forearm is a snap-on.  The latch is the push down lever, and you are correct in that it has no safety.  Whoever had it seems to have taken good care of it.  I suspect it sat in somebodies closet for a LONG time.

Thanks,

Pat
