New Rifle - 223 Ackley Improved
« on: November 06, 2006, 08:23:37 AM »
Well. the rifle is at the gunsmith and he's putting on a new Hart 1 in 12" twist 26" heavy barret on a Remington VSL.  Anyone have any load data for a 40 grain bullet that they would like to share?  Also, what kind of safe velocity have you been able to achieve?
Would like to be able to get around 3900 FPS but don't know if that is a good number.

The numbers I keep hearing is 4 to 1.  For every 4% increase in powder, you get a 1% increase in velocity.

I have a .222 mag AI I built in a G2 Contender, it's a great shooter.  I am loading a 52 grn Sierra HPBT match bullet over 27.3 grns of IMR 4320, it shoots well and has killed plenty hogs and several deer.  I wish it had a 1-8 twist barrel???  I am planning on building a Rem 700 in a 22-250 AI with a 1-8 twist barrel, just have to get all the parts put together.  I don't worry about what everyone says about the extra powder, the cartridge looks great and shoots the same, plus, the brass will last forever!!!

That should be a great Contender round! Due to a better matchup of cartridge versus barrel length, I would bet that you would get close to the velocity one would expect from a 22-250Encore.

I'm thinking you are correct, haven't had a bunch of time to spend at the bench, but the bullets are not dropping like I thought they would.  The rifle seems to be holding out better than I thought, I think I shot over some coyotes last year down South???  I shot at some at 300+, held like I thought I should, never saw dirt fly in front of them???  I still have work to do.  I still want a 22-250 AI with an 8 twist barrel!!!

I have thought of a 22-250AI with the fast twist also, esp. with a 26" or longer barrel.

I would like to hear about you velocities with the 222MagAI.
