Mama says "you're only buying one" Need to make right choice???
« on: November 06, 2006, 05:05:54 PM »
I'm trying to decide which caliber of rifle to cover a very unusual combination....Long Range Mulies/Coastal Brown Bear.  I have two co-workers who have purchased Weatherby Sub-Moa Vanguards. For the money these rifles are magical...both .5 to .65 MOA. So I'm sold on the rifle. The only two calibers which might fill my needs are the 300Weatherby and 338WM. I am leaning toward the .338 simply because of the potential Coastal Hunt. Curious what ideas you have about loads and potential for the .338 for 300-400yd Mulie shots. I realize this caliber is certainly on the heavy side for mulies, but will it work? As far as the Big Bear I'm loking at 225-250 A-Frames/Partition or Barnes 3x. Any help or insight is appreciated. Thank You in Advance for your time.

Get yourself a 30-06, 270 ect. Sounds like you live in mule deer country. If you ever do go brown bear hunting, get a new rifle. If you can afford the brown bear hunt, a new rifle is nothing. If momma doesn't like that, tell her that she can have a new pair of shoes AFTER she wears out the ones she has! ;D

I load my 338 with 63 grs of IMR 4320 and a 200 grain accubond bullet.  I get 2825 fps and sub MOA accuracy.  That will work for the 400 yard targets, and a 250 - 300 grain bullet will just make it for bigger bears.

Like you say, the 338 is a little big for Mulies, but who cares, dead is dead. You can get some 185 gr. Barnes TSX bullets for it for Mulies and 225 to 250 gr. bullet for brown bears. But like Don Fischer said, nothing wrong with buying a new gun, especially if you can afford a brown bear hunt.

If I was hunting where I might encounter a big brown or if I was hunting for them, I would be carrying a rifle loaded with them in mind.  In my mind that would be a .338 loaded with a premium bullet of at least 225grs.
In the fwiw dept: I've never hunted a bear of any sort.

I was talkin to the_bear ... he has a post on a long range 338... he says (and by the way I totally aggree with him) you can get a 338 RUM and it will give you anything you'll ever want from a 338 caliber.  load it hot and you'll have a monster 338 or load it to 338 win mag levels and it woun't kick the crap out of you lol.  I think 338 rum is defently the way to go with a stainless rifle and CRF

Get a gun for what you're doing NOW. If and when the time comes you have the money for a coastal brown bear hunt the price of a gun for the hunt will be of no concern. You don't need a magnum for deer so why bother.

Graybeard is right on this one.  BTW, what Mama says only applies to right now.  Later on when the bear hunt opportunity arises; then it's time for the new rifle.

or you could just go spend a bunch of money and get a .30-378 WBY, if you are allowed only one.

Or a .30-06 and learn to get closer than 400 yards before shooting.

I appreciate the replies.  After some soul searching, I must admit "IF" the Coastal Hunt happens I'll deal with it then.  For now I'm going to concentrate on the Mulies and Elk gun.  Don't ask me why, but not unlike a kid wanting a new toy, I have a yearning for one of the WSM's.  Heck I'v had the opportunity to spend two weeks shooting a .308 up to a 1000yds, so I'm well aware of the capability of "grandpaws" guns, but you only live once!! By the way I can't afford to be too forceful with mama cause she's the one who commited to springing for the Coastal hunt. Lord knows on a State Troopers salary I couldn't afford the outfitters Tip!! Nonetheless it's either a 270wsm or 300wsm for me.  Thanks again, you guys have a very informative site, and should be proud of your efforts!

If mama won't let you have two rifles, what makes you think you are goin' on a bear hunt?  ::)

Do what I do -

When it comes time to get a new toy, take Mama to the jewelry counter at Costco and have her pick out something that costs the same as the new toy.   This accomplishes two objectives: 1) You are the HERO in Mama's eyes and, 2) You are free to buy ANYTHING you want.

The downside?   Everything you buy costs twice as much.

BUT, Mama is happy and when Mama is happy, EVERYONE is happy!

Get the 30/06.  Use 165/180 for deer/elk.  Put 220s in gun while skinning them and packing them out.

Sounds like what you really want is the new Ruger M77 Hawkeye Alaskan in the brand new 375 Ruger/Hornady cartridge.  The specs say this will throw a 270 grain at 2,800 fps.  I'm guessing that that velocity number comes from a longer pressure barrel.  But I'd surely expect at least 2,700 fps with the 270 grain.

For your 400 yard ?!? shoots at Mule Deer you should be able to crank this up to almost 3,000 fps with the Woodleigh 235 grain.  Then for those coastal bears you can switch over to a 300 grain from either Woodleigh or Swift.  The 300 grain should still pop out at 2,600 fps a performance level ideal for 1000 pound plus Brownies.

This new cartridge is the most performance that can be packed in a '06 length action and the Hawkeye has controlled-feed and a Mauser-claw extractor.

If you were willing to restrict your shots at Mule Deer to 300 or 325 yards at the very most you could do just as well with the New Ruger Frontier II rifle in either 338 Federal or 358 Winchester.  Both of which will also work against large bears if 250 grain bullets from Woodleigh, Swift or Nosler are driven at 2,400 fps.  The speed that made the 416 Rigby famous.  In the 338 Federal 210 grain bullets can be driven at 2,600, and in the 358 Winchester the 200 grain bullets will go at least 2,550 fps from the 16 1/2 barrel of the Frontier II.  The awesome both eyes open shooting you can do with the scout scope configuration is just the ticket when shooting Bears at close range.

The later two calibers have the advantage of being about the best performance that can be cranked out of a short action.

Good luck and you really can make do with one if the 358 Winchester is your choice.

If your Mama is like my Mama, all guns (long guns, anyway) look the same to her. Unless she's really paying attention, she'll have no idea how many guns you actually have, especially if you have them locked up in a gunsafe. :-)

Just get the Weatherby in 308.  As you stated "Heck I'v had the opportunity to spend two weeks shooting a .308 up to a 1000yds, so I'm well aware of the capability of "grandpaws" guns,"  This is a good round very accurate, short action, and will get the job done on any deer. ;)

Of the two choices a 300 weatherby or a 338 well hands down the 338 wins in my book  ammo for it is a helll of alot more places thenthe weatherby and well I feel it's the 30'06 of the medium mags.v you can load160's at 3400fps ( my personal is a 180 @3200 look at the ballistics and compare it's trajectory to that of a 7mm 140) or up to 275 or 300's if you can find them.

Simple choice...1 will work for both...You like the Weatherby Sub-MOA's...easy choice...

Get your's in 338 Win Mag...The Weatherby isn't a real improvement over it...ammo cost $20 or more a box most places...atleast in the B&M stores I frequent...and most mom&pop stores don't carry it...The triggers on these Weatherby's aren't the best... even after adjusting them...but you can get either a Timney or Jewel drop in replacement for it...and have a superb rifle...I have shot one of these in 308...they are sweet shooting rifles for the money...The 338 WinMag will work fine for LR mulies.. and for a good selection of ammo to feed it....http://www.nosler.com/index.php?p=11&b=3/&s=114....http://cpcartridge.com/cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_67

Enjoy...

 How about a 325 WSM? 180gr @ 3000fps+, 220's @2800.Kimber would be a good choice.
