30 06 barrel eject question??
« on: November 07, 2006, 05:46:46 AM »
I have a question about my 30 06 rifle barrel. I don't know all the technical names of the pieces so I'll describe it the best I can. It has to do when I fire a round through it and it won't let me remove the spent brass. The pawl at the bottom that catches the edge of the rim of the casing doesn't seem to drop down far enough. It works fine if I'm taking out an unfired round, but if I shoot the round it hangs up. I've cleaned and oiled everything I can think of and it still does it. I don't see any rough edges either, so I'm at a loss here. If I wait a couple 3 minutes for the casing to cool sometimes seems to help a little, but not always. Its a new barrel with less 20 rounds through it. Anyone have a suggestion on what may be the problem? Thanks! Larry

I would call or write to Thompson Center about the problem. I just looked at my Contender and there's no way it should do that.

Do you mean thet it extracts the case when you open the barrel but the extractor won't let go of the case head? If so you probably need to "very slightly" bend it down a little so its not putting as much preasure on the case head. It probably hangs up after firing because the case has expanded and is now tighter. If you mean it is jumping over the case head and not extracting at all then you may need to bend it up a little or get a new extractor. I assume its the first case. That problem is not very rare and is easily fixed. Also de-burr it if it as any really sharp edges that may be cutting into the case.   KN

Its the first. Its extracting the casing, but its not giving me enough room to  pull the casing all the way out. It binds up pretty hard on the casing when I try to pull it the rest of the way out of the chamber. I realize that the casing expands when its shot, but couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the casing out without almost forcing it by the extractor. I tried to knock off any sharp edges before, but it still isn't enough. I'll try bending it down a little and see if that helps. Tx for the information! Larry
