Considering a hog hunt in Florida.
« on: November 07, 2006, 08:50:25 AM »
I am going to be in Florida in early April 2007.  I might try to squeeze a hog hunt in in between trips to Disney.  Can anyone reccomend a good outfitter in FL?  My hunting technique would be spot and stalk and possibly using bay dogs if the stalking is unsuccessful.  I would be using a handgun and no fences is a must.

To meet your requirements you will need a lot of contiguous land.  Google "A Duda and Sons".  They manage for wildlife and should have what you are looking for.  I believe their track is 30,000 acres plus and due east of Disney about 30 miles.  Good luck.

FYI:  Alligator Alley is about 4 hours south of Disney.

Do a google search of the "Lightsey Cattle Company". They are about 40 minutes from Disney and mostly meet your criteria. I have killed and trapped literally 100's of hogs in central Florida and do not need a outfitter but my hunt on Brahma Island with the Lightsey's was the best hunt I have ever been on.

You don't need to pay an outfitter to shoot a hog in south Florida. They are everywhere this year. Look into WMA's that are close enough to travel to. I live in Palm Beach county, and there are two great places close by. Try Allapatta Flats and Hungryland. In both places, hogs are legal during small game season - no bag or size limitations. Just food for thought.

With a single hunting day of vacation (or two) and no opportunity to scout, your thinking about an outfitter is not a bad way to go for potentially greater success.  If everytime we visited a WMA we saw and/or bagged hogs (we don't) I would say that recommendation would be better.  When you get one on the ground, you will need someone to clean, cut, and ship it to you too.  Also an outfitter does not guarrantee success either just a better opportunity IMO under these circumstances.

The Tossahatchee State Reserve is within 30 minutes of Disney and east alone the Beachline Highway.  28,000 acres of WMA with plenty of hogs, deer, turkey, squirrels, bobcat, racoons, armadillo, and other hunters.  They may have a public opening hog hunt during your visit.  Google the WMAs and see.
