Question for all Smith x-frame owners.
« on: November 07, 2006, 09:32:28 AM »
I have a smith 500 serial number 167 I've had it for a few years and I've put a little over 3500 rounds through it I was wondering if anyone else with a x-frame revolver with this many rounds through it has experienced any problems. The one problem I've run accrossed is the hammer spring is not setting off the primers. I turned the adjustment screw all the way in and still one out of ten rounds the dud just has to be hit again and it goes off, I've tryed different primers so that is ruled out. Any info would be great.

I had a 8 3/8 inch 500 Mag that I put over 2000 rounds through, I sold it to my buddy that has shot about 500 to 600 rounds and he is not having any problems.

Are you shooting reloads? If so, are your primers all the way to the bottom of the primer pockets?

Yes I do seat the primers all the way I've even tryed just seating them flush with the case. I'm going to try to possibly make a slightly longer set screw for the hammer spring. It looks pretty easy to make, one of the plusses of being a machinist.

Could the hammer pin be dirty and binding enough to slow down the hammer?
