build me a gun!
« on: November 07, 2006, 11:14:56 PM »
just sent two guns to dustin Linebaugh ones a redhawk going to be a 480 4 inch gun. The other is the one im taking input on. Its a new aniversary flattop 44. Hear is the for sures. Its going to be a bisley and its going to either have a 4 inch or 4 5/8s barrel. IVe got two .500s already and dont need another. I have one vaquero being built now into a 4 5/8s 475 but that option is still open for this one. Its either going to be a case hardened framed gun or a two toned gun with a stainless frame and will have an octagon barrel. Chamberings available for consideration are 5 shot 45 480 and 475. Im kind of stuck on this one as i dont have much use for cast bullets over 1300 fps so the 45 will be run mild (but ive never had a 5 shot 45) 480 is a thought but im allready having the redhawk done in that and the 475 will do anything and more. Im kind of leaning toward another .475. Ive got quite of few case hardened customs allready and only one two toned custom so im kind of leaning that way. I wish someone with photo shop capabilitys could show me what a two toned roundbutted 4 inch bisley with a 4 inch oct barrel would look like on a flattop frame and the same thing in a 4 5/8s

Cool!  From what I hear, Dustin does just as good of a job as John.  We want pics when they come back.

Lloyd, I can't give you much input about what caliber you should go with.  But I will tell you that you should do the 4" barrel and round butt!  It's very surprising how well a 4" single action handles.  Wouldn't think it would make much difference, but it really does!  I had Ken Kelly make me up a 4" round butt on a Ruger Blackhawk .45.  Sweetest handling gun I have ever owned!  You will love it!  44 Man

We definitely want pictures!

With a straight Bisley configuration I would go with the 4 5/8 barrel as the extra length of the Bisely grip looks unbalanced on a barrel shorter than that. I'm not sure what round butting a Bisley would look like and that might let you go with the shorter barrel without being unbalanced. I'd like to see the Photoshop job too.

With the .475, is the ruger frame long enough to allow you to use the bullets you would want?

ive got round butted bisleys in 4 inch with an oct and round and 4 5/8s round barreled I mostly want to see what a 4 5/8s oct looks like with a roundbut and what a two toned gun would look like and would like to see what a flattop frame looks like with them. 44 man you know my passion runs toward the 4 inch guns. But i allready have two 500 line 4 inch and this will be a boomer too and i dont know how the 4 inch will look with the flat top and ajust sights. Sure looks good on a vaquero though.

Lloyd, I just got 2 cylinders from Bowen Classic Arms from 357 anniversary models.  I already sent you a pic of my Anniversary model with the Bisley parts,  now think of it as a 38-40/40S&W/10mm with a 5.5 inch barrel band barrel and interchangeable front.

Sorry guys, I dont know how to post a pic, maybe lloyd can for us.

Lloyd, great customs you have there.  I only have two :'(.  One is a Redhawk that was converted to a tight tolerence 45 Colt from the orginal 44 Mag.  The other is a 5-shot 45 Colt 5" with a birdhead Bisley grip frame, customized ORH peep rear and brass bead front.  Fits my hand like a glove.  I only wish I had gone with an octogon barrel.

Lloyd, .44man, & all
No custom guns here (yet) but I know exactly what you are saying about those short barreled single actions.
The balance, pointability, and accuracy of my little (Stock) .45 Birds head is incredible! have only had this one since last Jan but it is in serious contention with my standard 7-1/2 Vaquero for this deer season.

Lloyd,  Awhile ago I saw a blackhawk grip frame that was a brownish dark bronze color.  I thought that would look nice on a case colored frame with a browned barrel.  I think the 4 &5/8" or maybe 5"octagon barrel would look better then the shorter one because of the extra bulk.  The shorter barrel would be like my grandmother, short and squat.  Maybe fire blue the pins and even cut slots in them so they look like screws.  Maybe an old style dovetail front sight.  Dressed with a pair of aged ivory stocks.  .45 would be a fitting caliber with lots of versatility for the antique look of your custom sixgun.
