223 superlight for my son
« on: November 08, 2006, 05:01:33 AM »
I built a 223 superlight for my son (9)
I liked the superlight because it had no iron sights and I was planning to use a scope on it.
I put a Nikon 2.5-7 shotgun scope on it because the paralax is set at 75 yards and it's a compact scope
I cut the synthetic stock down to match the length on his CZ Scout
I polished the bore with JB (www.snipercountry.com/HotTips/Breakin.htm)

I got some 64g win sps and had it doing 1" groups at a yard yards right away
I got some Federal TRU 64sps at a local police supply shop for 9.50 a box! and it groups the same

this year will be his first deer hunt, I will leep him at 75 yards or less on a doe
where we will be hunting it won't be a problem getting him a doe in at 50 yards and he's going to be doing neck shots
I know from personal experience that those 64g sps will drop a deer in it's tracks with a neck shot and his groups shrink considerably when shooting at a smaller target.

This gun has a 1-12 twist and a surprisingly good trigger, nice, light and crisp, probably around 3lbs
not as light as my old Sako but that's fine of course for him

Just reporting on the gun and am not going to get in a debate on caliber choice.
We have shot tons of deer with a 223 and have never lost one
I think having him be able to train with a gun that isn't making him flinch and getting him comfortable and accurate is critical

You seem to have the most sensible and reasonable approach I have heard yet as to using a .223 on deer.I sincerely hope he is successful.

That's good news to hear that the 1:12 will stabilize the 64 grain PP's.  Good luck to your son on his first deer!

that was my main point
it grouped them fine
my old sako 243 does one ragged hole groupings but MOA is more than adequate for a 9 year old at close distances!

it is funny that I can get Federal "tactical" ammo for less than I can get "hunting ammo" for !

When I first got my 22-250 I was very surprised to see the trigger was 2.5lbs and very crisp and clean. I'm glad to see more rifles coming off the factory line like that. Good luck to your son, sounds like a real good setup there.

Good luck and post picks.

Did you leave the full lenght stock on or did you swap it for a youth one.

I cut about 3/4" of an inch off and reused the same recoil pad with some minor fitting required
I also had to move the rear strap screw forward

Hello CCoker, Welcome to the wonderful world of handis.
I see two more Handi-holics in the making, You and your Son.
I did live in Austin back in the 60's 70's and earkt 80's.
I worked with guys lived Dripping Springs, all they every
used was 222 Rem. 50 & 55 grain bukkets, I also used 222 Rem also.
You shold have a youth stock for your Son, Then when he grew some,
get him a full size stock. Good luck Hope your son gets a fat doe,
 Then bacjstrap for breakfast. Marv.

I agree on the eating part 100%!
I don't shoot every buck I see, 99% of them keep on walking, oblivious to how close they came!

Sounds like you have got your little guy all fixed up for the season, and I am happy to hear you have your superlight shooting so well.
I look forward to a report on the performance
