Hornady Now Loading 9.3x74R
« on: November 08, 2006, 12:47:25 PM »
I have always been intrigued by the various German  9.3 rounds but especially the 9.3x74R perfect for single shots and doubles due to it's rim.  No smiths I know of can bore a barrel to 9.3 .  Just curious how many of you would be interested in a Handi-Rifle in this chambering if avaiiable.

I was interested until I found out my smith doesn't do the .366" bore either! :(

It is not that they can't rebore and do riflling for that this caliber, it is the cost of deep hole drills, rough and finish bore reamers, cutters and chamber reamers etc that need to be invested in for a very limited market, where the bases are covered by 338, 358 and 375 calibers.

Ruger has anounced a #1 in 9.3x74R but has yet made one. It has bee anounced for a long time. I believe they are waiting for feed back from dealers to find out how much interest there is for this caliber, before the gear up and make them???

I ask about that rifle, and all I got is a shrug of the shoulder, if it ever it is made I might buy one. Not that I ever would need it but it would establish bragging rights.
In a #1 it is a beauty.

Get a rebore to 375 JDJ. Easily the ballistic twin, easily made from readily available 444 Marlin brass. The American shooting public has no love for these light big bores, though they will easily kill anything you point them at. Prolly has a lot to do with the fact that whitetail deer are the most commonly hunted game in the states, and the majority of deer hunters are not going to bother with learning to deal with the recoil of such a chambering. A surprising number of people have a 45-70, how many people do ya actually meet totin' one in the field?

I’m going to take my 1895 to the woods this Saturday.  I pity the poor fool deer that walks in front of that. :D

If memory serves me correctly Pederoselli (sp?) makes a Kodiak MK5 double rifle in 9.3x74R.  I dont own one but I sure wish I did the look beautiful, and they just drip nostalgia. 8)

Have a double rifle in that caliber (Valmet 412) and it is a great caliber, except the brass is $$.  NOW, if you want something along those lines, why not take a 38-55 handi barrel and rechamber to 38-72?  You can make brass from 405 win.  Just dremel on the ejector a bit.  Its what I am planning on doing once my chamber reamer gets here.  Just a 405 win necked down to the 38-55 bore dia.  You don't have to pay for a rebore job, just a handi barrel.  Should be just a bit less than the 9.3 x 74R, which is hefty in its own right.

38-55 barrel has and odd ball bore .377 or more? Non of the .375 Bullets will work very well. The 9.3x74 shoots .366 bullets they they wont work.

What you are doing is strictly a cast bullet job, withan odd ball case,  if that is what you want.

If I would want a big bore, I have a Handi barrel rebored and turn it into a 405Win or a 375 JDJ. At least you can shoot standard size bullets.

Tim.
That is a nice looking 405 rig. Way too much recoil for me, I even get a sore shoulder shooting the 25 Hunter. Lots of arthritis every where.

Sold  several rifles and all my 12 gauge shot guns  including my nice Winchester model 21. That hurts as much as the recoil. Its not that I needed the money but my son did not want them.

Thanks Fred, it shoots as good as it looks with your load help, max loads of Benchmark and the 300gr Hornady SP at 2435fps make nice moa or smaller 100yd groups, maybe someday I'll actually shoot something beside paper with it!! ::) Recoil isn't all that bad with the Limbsaver and lam stock set.

I completely forgot to answer your question...I think this would be another nice round for a Handi...A nice classic cartridge offering ...You bet...I would buy one...but only if they offered it in a 26-28" barrel...
