teflon tape for breech plugs
« on: November 08, 2006, 01:45:22 PM »
What is the difference between regular white teflon tape and pink teflon tape for use on breech plug threads?
Can the pink be purchased at a hardware store?

Thanks,
Terry

The pink withstands much higher temperatures. I've seen both the yellow and pink at Ace Hardwares.

I went through a bit of agony with the Huntsman stuck breech plug and 777 even when using pink teflon. What I learned to prevent a stuck plug is not to tighten it more than finger tight and to use good anti-seize grease. After the first shot, I back off the plug a quarter turn and continue shooting. After shooting back off the plug again. Since I do this, I have never had to use teflon tape and the cleanup is easier.

I have had no problems with the white teflon tape?
But the most I have shot mine in a row without
removing the plug and running a patch through is about 7 shots.
Then the tape was replaced anyway.

Shooters choice high temp grease is the best thing going. I have used Shooters Choice high temp grease for years with my Encore, I have never had a breech plug seize.
I have shot over 20 time without touching the breech plug and still was able to remove it easily.

Use white.  I'm not familiar with the pink, but I once tried the yellow stuff meant for gas/propane lines.  It was thicker and nearly locked up the plug.

The only disadvantage to teflon is the need to clean it out of the threads once a year.  I've used grease but got tired of the mess.  Both methods work well though..

Use the white tape. Works better than the pink.
Who needs that messy grease?

So far I've used Clean Shot, American Pioneer, Shockeys Gold (all the same) and 777. In the 5 years I've had my Encore I've never had a froze breech plug. All I use is T/C Gorrila Grease and lightly snug up the breech plug.

Somebady may have already provided you your answer - but here goes again...

White Tape - thinnest of the tapes
Pink Tape - Next thickest
Yellow Tape - Thickest

Which tape you might use in your gun really has nothing to do with the pressure that tape can withstand...  You will need to use the tape tape works best in your gun.  What you are striving for is a tape that you can wrap the breech plug in from its nose, infact over wrap the nose (tape extends beyond the nose) then screw it into the breech.  The plug should go in somewhat snuggly but not so tight that it tears the tape.  If white is to loose then move to pink or apply more wraps of white.

Tape is all I use on my BP - no messy grease - if you tape them right and seat the BP correctly you do not grease.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....
