2X Burris or Reddot on a Mod 57

Im  not  goin to debate the right or  wrong of  scopes on a handgun, I know  to many hunters who would never leave  home  without  a scoped rifle.  My  eyes  are not  what they use to be  either..Enough on  that.

 I've got the  choice of a 2X Burris or an Ultra Dot   Match  dot  on My  8 3/8  Mod 57  .... Which   do you  perfer  and  why  if you please

I had a burris 1x on my model 29 for 1000's of rounds, very very reliable. Shot it until the mount screws sheared off, then move it to a TC Encore handgun in 6.5x55 again many high powered rounds, no problems. Cheap red dots are not reliable, Aimpoint is good. I recommend the burris.

It would depend on the shooting you intend to do. If you are hunting, either will work. It will come down to your personal choice. If low light will be an issue, go for the scope, if low light is not a problem go with the Ultra-dot. I have one on My BFR 500 Mag, it is the Ultra Dot Match dot  and it works great for hunting and shooting. I had one on my 460 Mag, but I went back to a 2X6 scope to get the full potential of the 460.

What I like about the red-dot is how fast you can pick up your target.

The Ultra-dot Match-dot is not cheap nor is it unreliable. I have one on a 500 Mag with over 2000 rounds fired. I had one on my 460 Mag with about 700 rounds fired, the only reason I took it off was to go back to a scope to get the full potential of the 460 Mag.

Just for your information, I blew out a Aim Point red-dot after 25 shots on my 500 Mag, it was not cheap, but it sure did not last on the 500 Mag.

Easy now,,,,I did not say YOUR scope was cheap or unreliable. I was speaking in general terms about electronic scopes with red  dots. Sorry about your unfortunate luck with the Aimpoint. My Aimpoint 2000 started its life out on a Dan Wesson 41 mag then 10 years on a High Standard 22 in continuous service in bullseye competition. Then on a model 29 and it still works great, it is a wonderful, reliable and amazing piece of quality eqiuipment that has served me well in competition ranking in the master division and match champion several times. Conservatively speaking the Aimpoint has seen 5000 round of 44 mag, 2000 rounds of 41 mag and 50,000 round of 22.

I was not upset in any way. I was giving you examples. Sorry if I come across that way. It is hard to write something and you can't see the expressions of the person witting it.

I agree that there is a lot of cheap red-dots out there, some in my opinion are plain junk. But I have tried all the top brands which are great on rounds up to 44 Mag, but anything past that will not hold up. The only red-dot I found that has held up to the 460 and 500 Mag's is the Ultra-dot.

If the question was weather to use a scope or a red dot for hunting, go with the red dot.  Which red dot opens another debate.  I have trouble viewing a moving animal in a pistol scope.  It gets worse the faster the animal is moving or the denser the cover is that he is moving through.  I don’t have that problem using a Holosight.  With both eyes open I have no problem keeping the dot on the deer.

One bad experience I had with a red dot scope goes like this. The temp was -15. Complete snow cover and several hours exposed to this. I had a shot at a deer and could not find the dot in the bright conditions. The low temp did not agree with the batteries and the bright sun made things worse.

Two deer and one bear with my 500 Mag and no problem with the Ultra-dot red-dot. I was able to see it just fine in the bright sun shine. I guess we all have different reasons why we either use or don't use certain things.

For me it depends on the way I am hunting. If I'm in a stand I prefer a scope, if still hunting a low power scope or a red dot works fine. If you vision is starting to give you problems I would go the scope over the dot.

Also do some practical practice with both using field postions on days with varring light conditions and see what works best.

Snow and temp was 15 degrees, not sub zero but like I said not one problem. Also I don't sit all day with the red-dot on, I conserve the battery. With the intensity setting on 11, I can see the dot even on the brightest days.

Like I said red-dots are not for everyone. So I think you made your point.

You are right. To have the red dot on all day or even several hours would be a mistake, especially in cold temps.
