Lost to history
« on: November 09, 2006, 05:09:12 AM »
Here is a model I found at ebay and couldn't recognize it. Couldn't find it in history books either so I believe it has been lost to history. So this leave me to figure out how it must have been used. I think it was an ingenious idea if I am right. With the barrel mounted this way, they could fire on the enemy while in full persuit and charging.

It looks like it is being sold by someone with absolutely no knowledge of muzzle loading cannon.  Since there are no cap squares, the barrel can be put on either way; perhaps the preponderance is wrong and the muzzle drops when mounted correctly.

Yes, this is one of my earlier efforts at attempting to not only reduce but absolutely nullify felt rearward recoil. This is a model made before I worked all the bugs out of my theory involving the circumference of the outside edge of the rimbase being in essence only an infinitesimally minute duplication of the innermost ring of Saturn. Both of these geometries, of course, also being echoed in the configuration of the circle described by the circumference of the trunnion face itself, only in an even more miniscule dimension.

Huh?

"it may be so, but I don't know,
It sounds so gosh darn wierd-
I hate to doubt your word my friend,
But that stuff won't go here"

There you go BoomJ -Figured it was after you mention on the other thread that you would not be doing anything for a while and were lost in space.Did you try to shoot it? is that why it is for sale? Really old boy,If you don't mind my saying so,You should have made some endeavour to grasp the essentials of cannon design before concentrating on those other considerations that you mention. Important though they may be.
How is your thesis on the wheel coming along by the way?Slowly it seems.Understandably given that any mature and unimpaired intellect would deem your task to be an impossibility -that is to erect an argument to refute a theory which you are 'unable to bring to an understanding' but do persevere.
You have center stage.I the members of the the forum,a fair percentage of the English speaking people on the planet, and not to mention those with English as a second language await its publication with keen anticipation .Dare I hazard a guess as to its content? Are you about to reinvent it as 'The BoomJ' wheel ? Say that over to yourself a few times I think you will agree that it has a certain ring or cadence to it reminiscent of the square.Do not disappoint us my boy and stay in touch I can't tell you how much I enjoy these fun exchanges with you.

Sorry, your wrong Dave, I drive a semi tractor trailer in deliveries to make my living. I'm not sure if that makes me better or worse than being an insurance salesman, but thats what I do. The "Huh?" is understandable. What I wrote seems weird, because it is weird, it's gibberish, it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. It was a nonsensical response to the snide question put to me by Freddo asking if I was the maker of the backward mounted cannon, which by the way I'm not. Don't ask, it's a long story. A story that is becoming longer and scarier by the minute. If your going to offer the advice that this would probably be better handled on a PM, don't bother, because I'm already in agreement with you but I don't think this would suit Freddo's needs. I hope this clears things up for you. Im not nuts or at least I hope I'm not nuts, although I'll admit Freddo is slowly but surely beginning to drive me a little batty.

I hope this is the real Freddo speaking, because the other one was starting to get a little scary. I'm with you on the fact that sarcastic wit and good natured witty repartee can be fun, in this we are in agreement but I think that Luigi Pirandello's take on the farcical absurdity of life might be better left to the stage and novels. It's a little disconcerting when it's used in a one on one real life situation. How was I supposed to know you were joking when you sent a message admonishing me about the dubious nature of sarcasm itself and the inherent lack of character of any person utilizing it, then peppering the same exact message with sarcastic wit directed at me? Then to top it off, at the end of this message you make a plea to me to not use sarcasm with you seeing as it would offend your delicate sensibilities. To say the least, this disjointed message was a little baffling to me, which is why I didn't respond to it; I didn't know how to take it. The only way to take it is to think the author of it was crazy. The same goes for the symbiosis you thought you had formed with the " community", when you were pretending to be under the impression that you were speaking as one entity. OK, you got me, you got me good, and I took the bait, hook, line and sinker. You really had me buying in to this farce. I thought that anyone that could become this disturbed and obsessed over a disagreement that two people were having about the operation of an antique dished wheel must have to be loco. I'm more than glad, I'm relieved to find out this was a ruse and you were only having some fun with me, even though at the time I'll have to admit that I didn't find it all that hilarious. When I saw this topic I was scrolling down and presto, heres Freddo again, I thought to myself this poor guy can't let go. Then I read it and it was pretty good, "One of yours BoomJ", It's funny, I laughed out loud, so I responded in kind. I'm glad you appreciated it; unfortunately Santa Dave now thinks I'm hanging upside down from a chandelier by my toe nails. Then your second post came and I quickly went back to having some serious concerns about your welfare. I don't know if anyone's ever told you that you could have been a professional actor but I certainly think you could have been; perhaps even in one of Pirandello's plays, because you certainly were convincing in the act of seeming to be mightily perturbed with me, even to the point of venting some hostility in my direction. Well, I'm happy to be informed that this isn't the case and it was all in fun. I accept your gracious apology and I offer you mine in return. Maybe some of my words were a little harsh. I'm going to be perfectly frank with you, when you posted the message, 'Gee! BoomJ it isn't that difficult to understand', I'll admit to being somewhat annoyed by it. This is when I decided to compose my "epistle to the wheelwrights". I'm also pleased to be informed that you really do agree with me and most of the literati around the world that "Shakespeare" and "Voltaire" when utilizing sarcasm in their works weren't displaying low wit but to the contrary, high art.

When I started the epistle it was a straight forward essay but being somewhat of a contrarian myself, when you posted the message asking me to please not use sarcasm in my "dissertation", I of course had to go and emend it posthaste,in order to liven it up with some humor. I'm glad that in reality you find this humor enjoyable because I don't have it in me to rewrite this damn thing again.
You've already proven that you can fire some barbed wit with accuracy, so I'm sure you'll feel free to shoot back if the need arises. Freddo, I know it's a long shot but who knows, there has to exist the slim possibility that you might even end up agreeing with some of my "thesis".

This has, without exception, been the most peacefull and polite resolution of e-misunderstandings that I have ever witnessed.  Most erupt into full-scale pissing contests.

Well done!
