357 Herret for Elk
« on: November 09, 2006, 12:51:10 PM »
I started a thread awhile back about the .357 Herret and elk hunting. I asked for your thoughts on the round and then started to work up a load and experiment. I wanted at least a 180gr expanding bullet with enough power to cause it to function. I figured at least 2000fps muzzel velocity. I wound up with a MV of 2134 (average conographed) using a Hornady .358 cal, 180gr Interlock bullet. Below is a 2" target with a 1" center with 10 shots at 100yds using sand bags. I don't plan using the load beyond 100 yds. Velocity at 100 yds is 1870fps, the energy is 1397 fpe. Drop from muzzel is 4.12". Any opinions whould appreciated. Thanks Don

You should try a different powder, it might take care those flyers. Just kidding!!! Nice groups. With the velocity indicated this must be a 14" barrel. Looks real good to me. Now all you need to do is get one of those elk to stand still at 100 yards or less. Good luck and let us know how it turns out on the elk.
