build me a gun 11
« on: November 09, 2006, 11:56:48 PM »
CAS designed this using photo shop pro. Its a 4 inch oct barreled two toned gun. Id change the grip frame to be roundbutted on both sides add a bisley hammer a cleaner front sight and swap the laminated stocks for maybe black micartas. What do you guys and gals think?

CAS,  you are a mad scientist!  Make us some more concept sixguns.  Please.

Lloyd, that one will require a custom cylinder.

Nah! Keep it stock.  Maybe just put a longer barrel and a scope on it. ;D  You could also fill in the warning paragraph with a nice gold inlay.  Yes everyone I'm just kidding.

I like it!!  The only thing I would change is to get rid of the adjustable sights and have a lower ramp frt sight with gold bars for diferent ranges, and a fixed rear sight. Then sight it in for one load and use the same load for everything.

But then, I personaly hate the looks of adjustable sights spoiling the clean lines of a SA pistol.

Naw sence we are spending Lloyd's money anyways lets go all the way to a Damascas sleeved barrel that is properly rust browned as Damascas should be. I like a dark well figured walnut grip myself but then everyone to their own taste. I have to vote for the 475 Linebaugh, would seem a shame to go to the trouble and cost of a 5 shot gun in 45 colt if it will not be shot over 1300 fps ever. Just my never humble opinion anyways....

your not to far off base either. That was my other thought. Dustin is doing damascus barrels now. A case hardened damacus oct would be a beauty too. I guess my thoughts for this one were more toward a working gun. One that i could bash around and not feel guilty about it. As far as fixed sights i allready have two .500s on vaqueros and one .475 being built on a vaquero. Again being that this is going to be a working gun for about everything from deer to whatever id like the option of adj sights. Plus its a flat top frame and thats part of the appeal to this one.

Why 2 vaquero 500's with fixed sights?  One for a light and one for a heavy?

One for right hand and one for left.  Lloyd with a working gun?  I'd like to see that! ;)

Llyod,

The two tone with Casehardened frame and Damascas barrel might be a bit busy but the idea that that gun could not be worked hard I don't get. I had seen, held , shoot many old 1800's rifles and shotguns with damascas that shur saw a lot of work on a ongoing basis for years and they looked great. Ross Seyfreid's no 13 is one of the sexiest guns in the world and I know it has at least two kills under it's belt. If that gun is what you drool for get it because it would be a one of a kind beast I tell you. Just let me shoot it if we should meet at John Linebaugh big bore siminar in Cody if I can get there.....

I agree with you on the seyfried gun its a beauty. If i went damacus i wouldnt two tone it that would look pretty gaudy. Alot of my customs are blued case hardened guns and i shoot my guns alot and the blued cased guns tend to show wear fast. Its a matter of about 100 rounds of full power loads in a linebaugh that you will see that the bluing will be about gone off the backstrap or at least showing some wear. Case hardening is another thing that shows wear fast. As Camel will attest im not the most anal guy at taking care of my guns. Even the customs get rode hard and put away wet! I guess my thoughts on a two toned gun is that it can look a little trick and still take a beating. The damascus cased gun would be a beauty but im afraid id have to baby it to much in the field to keep it looking that way.

Heck I have said before that Dustin Linebaughs 475 Vaquero is one of the coolest guns I have ever seen. I like the two tone finish but what really gets me is the honest wear it has from years of being crried on his hip and his trying to shoot the snot out of it. I have a thing for old worn, honest guns, a double bird gun with the blueing worn off the action and the checkering barely being there makes my mind race, a worn out Blackhawk that some ranch hand has carried for 20 years and I want it. I just have a thing for this type of a gun. It tells me so much, it must shoot at least decent or someone would have upgraded, it must be reliable, it must instill confidence and hold so many memories for someone.

I would never abuse a gun to get wear but guns are tools and honest sratches, holster wear, blueing wear, and cylinder rings are not a negative to me in this world of people (myself included) that buys a gun because we dream of hunts or shoots and need the right tools. But then life gets in the way and well, they sit in a safe and get shot at the range once in while and still look brand new 20 years from now. I like the look of a gun that someone lived the dream with....

Im with you pal. I know dustin well enough to know that you wouldnt get that gun from him for any ammount of money. I really enjoy handling an old lever gun with the bluing wore right off of it and a cracked stock. YOu just have to wonder about all the men who carried it and the places its been and the game its taken!

It is very sweet indeed! hardly seems right with money earmarked for CHRISTmas coming & all.
I think in the original (build me a gun) post, 2 dogs was going into more detail about how he did this conversion. I would be like All Ears ;D

Sorry boys,  getting murdered at work. To do the conversion all the frame  screw holes line up but the ears have to be cut off the frame.  Probably best done on a mill, I did some careful filing.  From there the grip frame to main frame fittling is done normally.  Next, my NM Anniversary had a differently shaped transfer bar.  Had to reshape it to get the hammer to be within the well.  May have to undercut it a little more still. A very doable conversion.   Oh yeah, I took out the saftey parts and used a normal strut. I also reshaped the front sight since mine was too tall.  The radius on the butt is what I call a penny radius on the toe and a quarter radius on the rear.
