Gunsmithing Manual for the Traditional Muzzle Loader
« on: November 10, 2006, 05:38:24 AM »
I hope this has not been asked before (probably has)...are there any "good" instruction manuals for working on the traditional muzzleloader? I realize the mechanism is simple but simple things usually get me into trouble. Thanks  :) I am particularly interested in the T/C line of traditional muzzleloaders.

There are a number of good traditional BP gunsmith books on building  to include lock building .
Lock stock and barrel is a good  basic over view  but books like  recreating the American long rifle  or recreating the  double barrel shotgun  go more in depth on complete building  just to name two .
With TC the only real difference is that they use a coil spring and shaft to fire the lock vs., a leaf spring  on   more common traditional designs .
All have basically 1 moving part . 2 if you count the frizzen on a flintlock and 3 if you count the small fly  on lock designed for double set triggers .
Tuning a lock  or triggers  is a  art in and of itself  but still pretty basic

You might look around for a copy of Sam Fadala and Dale Storey 's book, "BLACKPOWDER HOBBY GUNSMITHING". It is very basic, but covers a lot of ground to help get your feet wet......

Thanks...I went and ordered a used copy of "Blackpowder Hobby Gunsmithing" from Amazon for $10 and also placed an order for his newest edition of "The Complete Blackpowder Handbook" for $20 set for release by the end of November...I'll have to thank my wife for the early Christmas present  ::).

From a basic how to scratch book with tips of how to do things, I like Chuck Dixon's book, available from Dixon's Muzzleloading Shop, they have a web site.  I got my copy 20 years ago, and the information was great at explaining the way things work.  As for fine tuning a flint lock, it may not be the best, but it is great for the basics.
