cast bullet dia. for use in the handi

what size bullets will work in the handi? the bullets I order was suppost to be .458 but what I got was .460 will that work or will it cause high pressures in the gun.

Sounds like you got bullets for the 45/70 , what you need to do is slug your barrel to find out what your bore size act. is , i shoot both 458 and 459 in my handi barrel .

Depending on the bore you may be able to shoot them or you may need to resize or send them back . wish i could be more help .

since the bullets are hardcast instead of jacketed, and since the bore of the .45/70 is approx' .004 under your diameter i don't see you having any problems if the BHN of your projectiles is not too high.   i'd work up loads with those bullets in a proper manner and see how they do.

i'd also make sure that my calipers jaws are clean and the caliper properly zeroed to verify that the diameter of the bullets sent to me is wrong.    i'd also look to see if there's any 'frosting' of the projectiles or any oxidation or any 'flashing' from the casting process.   those conditions would possibly increase a projectiles diameter a bit without causing any real problems.

Just an FYI, the bullet Dewy is talking about is the BTB 525gr Piledriver, they do offer them in .460" and knowing Marshall's reputation, they measure that, I shoot the .459"s in mine and that's what they measure, although they weight 539gr, not 525gr, heavy gas check and lube, I guess!!! ;D

I shoot .459" in mine too.  They shoot good, so I really doubt they will shoot bad even if they are .460".  Now, a .457" would be an entirely different story!  ;)

SS makes a good point too.  Close the caliper/mic and make sure it reads "0".
