Know what you are saying as my freezer is getting kind of bare.
will be the 3rd consecutive year that I will leave my old Blkpwder rifle at home in favor of my
7-1/2 .45 Vaquero. My little Birds head has been begging me all summer long to make this trip (read shoots very well) and this still might be a possibility.
That full sized model is like a killing machine though and has proved to be no disadvantage over using the rifle.

"antsy", thanks, I knew I was spelling this wrong. That spell check has saved my bacon several times. Wish they would bring it back?

Pictures are from a cell phone.

Location is in Woodstock, IL at Local Archery store.

This is where we get out hunting and fishing licenses.

Thought you might enjoy.

Excellent choices & draws Casull.
You may be able to bide your time just abit, but those Deer figure things out pretty quick
Once the shooting starts as you know.
I may let a day or two go by as I am on private property but also at the intersect of two major
Escape routes. I probably wont give it real long as that freezer wants some meat in it.
Good Luck

The rut is on. No need to wait for anything.

Has been for the last week or so.

Got permission for 17th and 30th.

Others use the property for archery and shotgun.

Gratefull to be out on those two days at this particular location.

Drove out today to put up a ladder blind, and spotted a Doe and a Buck by the woods 10:00 AM.

May everyone fill their freezers and have a good safe time.

Probably not going to make it on the 17th. Rain this week has delayed the job I'm on from getting done. The 18th for sure.

I had a doe come in with her fawn on the 17th, about 65-70 yards away.  Wanted a buck, but after she bedded down in front of me and I watched her for 45 minutes, couldn't take it anymore.  Put a .454 slug through both shoulders of the doe.  End of hunt.  Oh well, still have a tag for the second season, and maybe I can get that buck then.  Actually, I'd rather see my daughter get her first deer, buck or doe doesn't matter.

I Missed! "well not sactly" I had a decent shot in a lane through the thicker stuff and ended up with gobs of white hair and one drop of blood 30yds away from the spot where the Deer was standing.

I gave it some time after the shot and spent two hours carefully unraveling the trail. No more blood, no deer. I even searched the fields on three different sides beyond this just to make sure.

Burns my $$ as I have never shot at a Deer that I have not taken since starting in 1981. Have helped out with plenty of tracking jobs for others so I am adapt at these skills.
I dont know what happened. I could not find any evidence of the slug deflecting off a limb or anything so I may have simply pulled the shot.
All after plenty of practice at the range in addition to countless hours of dryfiring. I have taken deer the last two years with this handgun and it had been shooting great. :(

I feel like a real Cubs Fan, "wait till next season". A buddy called from south in the state, he thinks the pre-rut is just starting down around Rend Lake?

Glanceblamm, don't beat yourself up.  We all miss sometimes.  And it doesn't sound like you left a wounded one out there to die, sounds like you probably just clipped the bottom of the brisket (white hairs and a drop of blood).  Deer probably doesn't even know its been shot.  Anyway, I hope you can get back out next week for the second season.
