all brass hull vs waxed paper hull
« on: November 11, 2006, 01:09:51 PM »
I have a winchester lever action 12ga (model 1887 I think). Was this gun intended to use the all brass black powder shells or the waxed paper black powder shells or does it make a difference?
What length is the chamber 2 1/2, 2 5/8, 2 3/4 etc...?

Thanks for any information

Should be a 2 5/8" chamber. Brass or paper, as long as the fired length is under 2 5/8".

Thanks DC.
I have been looking around on the net and it seems that magnatec make brass hulls. Any idea if they are 2 5/8?
Any ideas where I can come up with a recipe for a safe load?
I will continue to research.

Thanks for the input.

I don't know the length of the Magtech brass hulls.
You can call them at: 1-800-466-7191
Or e-mail them at: technicaldata@magtechammunition.com

I talked to them a couple of years ago, they would not supply any loading information. Brass hulls can be some pain to load initially. Regular 12 Gauge wads don't fit, too small. 11 Gauge wads fit fine, either cut your own (using an empty shell for a cutting punch) or Ballistic Products has them. As to load data, the boys at BP probably can come up with some.

My Magtech's mike out at 2.433. I have them slightly crimped to work in my 1897 pump, so they may be 2 or 3 thousanths longer without the chamfer. Should work with any of the chamber lengths.
