newbie need advice: rifle scope or spotting scope?
« on: November 12, 2006, 02:59:10 AM »
I'm new to hunting and want to use my sks rifle with open sights if possible but am unable to see the rings on paper target at the range.
I've got 20/20 vision but still can't make out target clearly enough to see the 10x let alone the outer rings. First can others with younger eyes see the target without opyics?
What do you recommend rifle or spotting scope?

I would say rifle scope. What good would it do to see your target thru a spotting scope if you can not see it to shoot.

Thanks.

Ok I got my rifle and will  go to the outdoor range to sight it in.
Will I also need a spotting scope for range shooting?  As I recall most shooters use them or binoculars.  Which is a better choice (binocs more versatile?) and please recommend specific optics.
Thanks.

At the range I like a spotting scope. It has a lot more magnification than bino's have. I use bino's for hunting and a spotting scope for some hunting.
I like to use quality optics for hunting and shooting, weather it is Leupold or Nikon scopes or Zeiss bino's. I get the best I can afford. Burris makes a decent spotting scope at a decent price.

I look at optics like this, if you can see it, you can shoot it. Get the best you can afford.
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

The basics of iron sight marksmanship require you to focus only on the the front sight. Since your eyes can only focus on one thing at a time, the rear sight is blurred as is the target. With practice,, very tight groups are possible at all ranges. I know this from years of rifle and pistol competition with iron sights. Nothing wrong with good optics, iron sights are still a viable choice for a variety of reasons like com;pact, light weight, durable and effective.
