Bowhunting in heavy rain and wind?
« on: November 12, 2006, 01:23:12 PM »
It looks like the weathermen predict that the next two days are going to be very windy and rainy. As an example, tommorrow's forecast will be rain, heavy at times with an easterly wind at 10-20 mph. I was wondering if I should hunt or just stay in until it clears a bit?

Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Friday stormed here until 2:00am and Saturday morning was windy with 10-15 mph with gusts to 30 mph. I went hunting anyway and this is from my hunting blog ....

MORNING
Hunted FB's in Noble's stand.
Wind from the left 10-15 mph.
Temp was 38°F
In stand at 0515, out at 0900.

0525 - In the half light a buck came from behind at a trot and stopped to smell the scent wick and then ran off.

0615 - A doe about 50 yards feeding and then after 20 minutes walked off towards creek.

0630 - A 8 point buck came in from right rear to about 60 yards checking out the scent wicks. After 20 minutes walked off towards my rear to thicket.

0700 - A doe walked from front to right, towards creek at about 50 yards.

0715 - The 8 point was back in same location nosing the scent wicks. Hung around for 30 minutes and walked off towards creek.

0830 - Spike came in from behind and was nosing around under my stand. He kept looking at me and after 10 minutes I finally got busted.

0845 - Large coyote came from behind and trotted towards thicket on left at about 40 yards.

EVENING
Hunted FB's in Noble's stand.
Wind from the left 10-15 mph.
Temp was 47°F
In stand at 1515, out at 1700.

1632 - Spotted a 6 point buck about 40 yards to my left studying 'Cyril' my buck decoy which was 25 yards directly in front on the stand. After 15 minutes he moved off to the thicket on left towards Noble's new ladder stand.

If it was me, I would hunt. Who knows what deer think and why but 1 thing i know is they are a slave to their stomachs :)

Point in question, my nephew shot a nice 6 point a couple of years back in pouring rain and the tree was swaying in the wind so much it actually made him sick.

Wind I do not mind.  And, I have the equipment for rain.  My only concern in the rain is the blood trail.  It does not take much to wipe out a sparse blood trail.  In heavy rain I think I would turn on the Outdoor Channel, sit back and sharpen broadheads.

I agree with Daveinthebush - you need to be able to follow a blood trail.  Except, forget the TV and let's go goose hunting.  Jim
