Remington Ammunition Designations
« on: November 12, 2006, 02:32:31 PM »
I inherited a Remington 742 and it came with several boxes of ammunition.  I have used mostly Remington Core-Lokt when I have used factory loads.

The ammunition I got with the rifle was Remington Core-Lokt,  Remington Core-Lokt Express, and Remington Bronze Points.  All were 150 grain so what is the difference?

The Core Lokt is a normal cup type bullet, lokt into place by the cannelure. The Core Lokt Express has a thicker jacket with an even thicker portion at the cannelure. The Bronze Points are cup type bullets with a bronze plug, located in the front of a small hollow point, much like the sexy plastic tips you get in more modern bullets. They were very fast at expanding and had a bad reputation for not penetrating. Certainly they weren't a good choice for velecities in excess of 3000 fps at the muzzle.  ;)

Thanks for the reply.   Would any of the 3 be alright for Wisconsin size Whitetails?

It depends on the velocity developed by your cartridge. 742s most often come chambered in .30-06 or .280 Rem. If yours is the former I'd probably choose the standard core lokts, the ultras are for higher velocity cartridges like the .300 mags, and the bronze point would be my choice in cartridges like the .30-30 or .30-40. But they'd all work given proper placement.  ;)

The bronze points work fine for rib shots, but that's about it.  My father used them for years and years because he liked to "rib shoot" his deer, and liked the internal damage they do to the lungs...  But like was said, they expand too fast for any other shot...

BTW, he used them in a Rem. 742 30-06...
