.223 rechambered to 220 swift?
« on: November 13, 2006, 03:50:47 AM »
Hey guys,

Too much time on my hands at night  ;D Do you think it would be possible to rechamber a .223 handi to .220 swift? I have an extra barrel that I keep staring at that keeps whispering to me to rechamber it. t is a 22" bull, but I could redo the 24" ultra just as easy, just have to figure out if it can be done. And if your wondering why I would want a .220 swift in a handi, well I just do!

So, what do you guys think, is it doable?

What are the operating pressures of the Swift? If compatable with the Handi platform, of course it's doable. Get it done!!! Let us know how it worked out.

I have a 223 bull barrel that has been rechambered to the 220 Swift. I have only shot it a few times but seems to do OK

Some of the reloading manuel's show the 22 250 about equal to the Swift, but there bullets will not withstand the full speed of the Swift. To get the full potential of the Swift,it needs a 26" barrel. The 220 will do 4300 to 4400 fps with a 40 gr. bullet at near max.loads, and some of the guy's are getting even more. Most of the 220's max load's are about 3 grs. more than the 22 250.
Yes they will burn a barrel out if you get it hot enough, but so will any of the other varmit caliber's.The Hornady varmiit load's were rated at 4250 fps. and they would do every bit of it through the chrono.I'm not sure if they would do well in a Handi though, because my 22 250 barrel shot loose after 70 rds. It took a .005 thick shim to bring it back to it's 1/2" groups with 40 gr. B.T.'s.  Hope this helps.   Digger

Is that .223 barrel a 1-9" twist?

Push it fast & don't be surprized if you can't find any bullet holes in your target.

OBX,

No, it is a 1-12 barrel, if it was 1-9 I would think about maybe a 220 CHeetah or something along that line.
