45/70 barrel question
« on: November 14, 2006, 02:53:49 AM »
Howdy all,

In my travels, I picked up a 45/70 Super 16" barrel with muzzle tamer - it's a fun and accurate barrel. When I measured it, I noticed the barrel was 16 inches to the rear of the muzzle tamer - a total of about 17 3/8" total length.

My question - is that the way TC does it? I always thought when you bought a barrel, it's total length was what was measured. (so a 14" with MT would be 14" total length)

If it should be a 16" total, what do I have here? It's marked "Super 16", maybe someone sent a non-braked barrel in to have one added?

Sorry - just one of those things that had me thinking.

Take care,
Bob S.

TC measures the length of the bbl not including the brake.

The "Hunter" barrel I have includes the length of the muzzle tamer in it's 14".

I have a Contender barrel in 30-30 with a factory brake that measures 14" and a 44 that measures 10"
I think if it came with a brake from the factory it is included in the length, sounds like you have an aftermarket brake installed.

It's a TC brake - I just have a hunch it was added to the barrel after it was originally made. The fellow I traded with said something about it being a "TC Custom Shop" barrel, but it has no special markings. I suspect the plain Super 16" barrel was sent back to TC to "Tame" it.

I'll take some pics and post them.

Thanks for the info,
Bob S.

My super 16  in the 45-70  with the muzzel tamer on it  measurer 17 3/8" long and is not a TC custom shop barrel, standard barrel from TC.  I believe all super 16 with muzzel tame measurer 17 3/8" long.
