22-250 loads
« on: November 14, 2006, 03:15:04 AM »
Ive been trying to shoot Sierra 63 grain varminter bullets out of my Ruger M77. I was hoping my young son could use this gun for his first year of hunting. I was using IMR 4320 powder but I've been less than satisfied with the accurracy with the various loads I've tried this gun is very accurrate with 55 gr. bullets. Has anybody had better luck with different powders or suggestions?

For my 22-250 I use IMR4064   35.5grs with the 55gr HP bullet gives me 3620 FPS.  That load has killed many groundhogs

I use R15 and Varget in my 22-250 and it shoots 55gr bullets excellent. I have tried Sierra 63gr and Winchester 64gr bullets and found them to shoot inconsistent groups. I just ordered some Trophy Bonded (Speer) 55gr and Nosler Partition 60gr bullets to try. My thoughts are the heavier bullets just aren't stabilizing enough in my rifle.

I have a .22-250 ruger in the same model. They have a 1-14 twist barrel. The 55gr is the biggest bullet you are going to be able to shoot consistantly.

I know my dad shot 63g sierras, don't know the exact load he cooked up, but they were wicked deadly on South Texas deer, hogs, whatever else was unlucky enough to get in his crosshairs
seen him take deer out at 400 yards with a 2-7 scope and the heads off of turkeys at 250 yards with that old Sako
he would go to the range and spend the entire day there with several guns and work up different loads there at the range!

Ive shot deer with 40 grain hornady v-maxs and winchester 50gr ballistic silvertips....Both shells dropped deer in their tracks. All front shoulder shots some quartering some broadside. None over 200 yards

I also have some 70Gr S.P. bullets loaded to about 3250 FPS using IMR4064. And at 200 yds they shoot one on top of the other.

I'd say use a bullet designed for deer in the .224 cal. There are several companies now making them in a weight that your rifle will shoot well. You may kill a lot of deer with a varmint bullet, but sooner or later you will wound one. I shot a doe once at 90 yards in the shoulder with a .243 varmint bullet. She stood there and looked at me and I finished her with a head shot. When I skined her out, the shoulder shot did nothing but damage a baseball sized flesh wound. She could have run off and died of infection. Shot placement and the right bullet for the right animal.
