Hornady SST and what sabot?
« on: November 14, 2006, 06:52:35 AM »
I've got a package of SST's and was wondering if the supplied sabots shot well with them? I think I've read some where that the MMP HPH24 50X45 sabot will work better. I've got a new Prohunter, and I'm trying to get it set up for opening day this Friday. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. :)

I use the 300gr. SST's with the Havester crushed rib sabot 2in.&< groups at 100yrd's and they load so easy! I threw the Harnady sabots away they load to hard in my ML.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

I shoot the 250 SST with the supplied sabots in my Savage and they work great.
Aim small don't miss.

Hornady SST's are normally supplied with MMP HPH-12 sabots, these are the thicker sabot and do load very hard in most rifles, not all but most.  Thompson Center Shockwaves (same bullet as SST's with a different colored tip were coming with MMP HPH-24's sabots) The HPH-24's load in the tight bores of the TC's very well.  The Shockwaves are now coming with a new MMP - yellow sabot made exclusivly for Thompson Center. Us mere mortals can not buy that one.  MMP also make make one sabot that is even thinner than the 24.  There are some guns out there that not even the 24 will load in so Del developed the 3 petal EZ load sabot. In my tests with it it does seem to shoot a better than the "crush rib" - greater velocity and consistent accuracy.

Hope some of this helps...
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....
