scope bases and rings
« on: November 14, 2006, 03:33:57 PM »
What is the best base and ring setup for marlin 336,looking at low power scope ,maybe 2x7 or a good 4x power.
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

I am using Weaver mount and Warne rings on my 1895 45-70 with a Leupold 3X9X40 scope. Great set up and every thing holds up to the heavy recoil rounds I am using.

I put tally mounts on my 1895 Marlin Guide gun I also used the tally rings to hold a 2 1/2 X 7 Leupold scope and it has worked out real well for me, Good Luck.........Joe.......

Warne rings and bases are rock solid and really nice.  All steel.

Leupold rings and bases are good too.  Again, all steel.

Weaver works but I don't like aluminum.  I've stripped out too many aluminum Weaver rings changing things around and moving scopes from gun to gun.

Good shooting.

Steel Redfield base and rings hold the Weaver 1.5-4x on my 336 quite well.  Leupold is a copy of the Redfield and works the same.

The advantage of all steel mounts is that if you should drop the rifle outta your tree stand and it lands upside down you will only destroy the aluminum tube scope while the mounts will likely survive ok.  Or, looking at it another way, aluminum mounts would be just as servicable in a destructive accident.

Trouble with the Weaver one piece base is that the center may touch your scope base.  This will shorten the life of its innerds.

Two piece bases by Millett are TOPS! Leupold has a nearly identical design.  Millett rings come in many grades including engraved for those who desire such things. These are the low mounts but I shimmed bases 3/32" with plastic from a license plate logo plate and sealed the edges with black polyurethane.  Very difficult to see these joints.

MIDWAY Shooting Supplies sells Millett products.  So does SHEEL's in Rapid City.

Good hunting to you.

I agree, go with a steel base and ring combo!!

I like the leupold line of products, but there are many just as good.

I like a Weaver-style base with quick-release rings, or at least a set of rings that I can get off with a coin. That way I can use the irons with little or no trouble by sighting through the center groove in the base after I pull the scope off. You never know when that will come in handy. Just be sure to sight in using your irons before you mount your scope. When at the range, I regularly set the 100-yard gong to singing offhand with the scope, then pull the scope off and try a second verse with the irons. My eyes aren't quite what they used to be but I'm still confident I can bring home the bacon if my scope fails.
