Got my first .30-.30 a few months back. Friend at work gave me a Foremost Model 3040 (J.C. Penny house brand, Marlin 336). Needed some work, but shoots really good now. Got to get it out before the season is over.

A friend of mine asked... Jon ya got a great Ruger M77 30-06 what the heck ya gonna want a 30-30 for anyway.  Ah hello, ya get into the woods and usually get only a 20 to 40 yard max shot... aint needin a 30-06 to blow up my deer.

A 30-30 works quite nicely and is very effective.

My son in law picked up a 74 model just like yours  at our favorite shop a couple days ago, for $199.  It's missing the slide for the rear site, but we shot it once to see where it was hitting, about an inch low at 50 yards.  If it wasn't missing the site part, I'd rate it at about 90% or so.

To add icing to the cake, after firing only one round thru it, it went to the woods today for it's maiden voyage, and it scored first time out.  Then tenderloins sure was good for supper.

Opps, may have spoken too soon.  Son in laws brother, who shot the first deer, had a nice doe standing broadside at what he guessed to be 60 yards, and he missed.  Four times.  Guess we need to go back to the firing line and see if it was the sights or the shooter.  I rather suspect the shooter.  But we need to see anyway.
