How far will an arrow go
« on: November 15, 2006, 02:43:10 AM »
How far will an arrow go from a crossbow? I am not asking about hunting distance bot how far can the arrow travel

the reason I am asking is: when I get my bow it will be to late to use it for deer hunting so I want o use it for spring turkey and worried about a miss and how far the arrow will travel

I am not sure I would use a crossbow on turkeys, I know with normal arrows in my longbow that is only 50 pounds or so that I can toss an arrow out past 100 yards no problem, have done it several times. Now with flu-flu arrows in a bow they go maybe 20 yards or so.

With a crossbow there is no telling how far they can fly.

I hunt turkeys with a crossbow and have been successfull a couple of times at under 25 yds. I use Zwickey grapplers to stop pass thrus on the bird so he has trouble getting away.
A xbow may fling a bolt over a hundred yds, but with the short arrow after 60 yds the drop is horrendous. Doesn't matter how fast a xbow is 40 yds is the max for deer for me 25 yds for turkeys and varmits like coyotes.

A crossbow is not going to shoot an arrow any farther than a bow will. in fact the shorter arrow looses energy faster as they are not as heavy. Even though both can fling an arrow past 100 yards they are both a short range weapon and comparable in characteristics of arrow flight, distance and energy.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Digger, do you set the Grapplers prongs inline with the broadheads blades or offset? Thanks-Jack.

How far will an arrow go? A LONG WAY!

Back in the days of my youth I used to shoot a bow a lot. I had an old Ben Pearson solid fiberglass 35 pound pull recurve I bought on my 12th birthday that I used to shoot at cardboard boxes placed 200-300 yards away. The arrows got there and with practice I got to where I could occasionally hit one and usually could come within 25 yards with most arrows even tho I had no sights and was aiming up into the sky.

I can't say how far a crossbow bolt will go but it will go a LONG WAY. I assume that every arrow fired at game is a loss. Sure you might find it and it might not be broken and it might be usable afterward but I've found more not usable after shooting at game than were usable again. I just assume it a loss and if I find it and it's good that's great.

I recall one buck I fired a second arrow at when it was something over 50 yards away. I really thought arrow #1 was a hit and it just hadn't died yet. WRONG it was a miss as was #2. That second one hit a limb just in front of the buck and veered upward. That was 30 years ago but for all I know that arrow might still be going. No way was it coming back down where it could have been found if it came down at all. It might have stuck up in a tree as it was sure climbing last time I saw it.

I used to fail to get pass thru shots on deer with my 65 pound set up and so switched to an 82-85 pound pull bow. I don't think I ever found another arrow after that unless there was a vertical bank behind the deer. They zipped thru going so fast that they just kept on going and going like the Energizer bunny.

I am not too worried about a pass trough on a deer because 95% of my shots will be from a tree stand at about 20 feet. so they should  be foud in the ground on the other side of the deer or close to it
I am more worried about turkeys and other small game that I will take  (hopefully) from the ground

ALL of the deer I'm talking about were taken from treestands at least 15' high at deer on the ground. The ONLY arrow I've found since the switch was one that hit a vertical bank behind the deer. Now you might hunt on flat ground, I hardly ever do. There ain't much of that in the mountains where I hunt. Heck even in a treestand deer might be above me when a shot is taken or WAY below me.

I hope the deer are on the ground and not in the air ;D

You are right most of the ground I hunt on is flat every deer I have shot at was on the ground and I found the arrow normaly under where the deer was.

Yea  Bill arrows will go a long way if you shoot for the sky, but on a normal shot  level on the ground at hunting distances  and having your xbow or bow sighted in at say 20 or 30 yards that arrow will hit the ground pretty fast most of the time it will slide under the grass or leaves never to be found unless you hit a tree. Most folks that shoot from a tree will find their arrows if the angle is steep enough. If not I suppose you will lose them just like a level on the ground shot. I hunt from the ground and figure every shot I shoot that is not a hit that arrow is gone unless I hit a tree.
