Best buys in the current milsurp market?
« on: November 15, 2006, 09:22:35 AM »
What's the best buy on the market under $150? Under $300? I hear the k31s are the class of the current field. Do most of you agree with that?

The K31's are good and you can pick up boxer primed softpoint ammo for them fairly easy now. The Mosin-Nagant is another good buy and a good rifle and ammo is readily available for them also at bargain prices. A good British .303 is also a good buy and it makes a good hunting rifle.

I like the K31's and the various 8mm's myself.  I do have a M/N M38 that is very accurate with my handloads.  I just purchased my first British 303 yesterday but don't know about the accuracy or anything yet.

Turkish 8mm rifles are pretty cheap. Find one in good shape and you will have a good shooter.
Aim small don't miss.

The swiss rifles I have been seeing lately look pretty bad except the bores. I guess that is all the matters though.
ugly wood doesn't make it shoot bad I guess

The reason they have bad wood is the Swiss used them and stacked them when doing drills. They would kick the butt when taking them off the stack with hobnail boots, so most all the stocks at the bottom are rough. You can refinish them by steaming out most of the dents in the wood and sanding down what can't be steamed out and they look almost original. Or if you don't want to do that, you can buy a replacement stock from Boyd's. Even with the rough looking stock, they still shoot very good and accurate.

Or you can do it yourself and make one look like this.

I found this pic on this site that describes how to make your own custom K31.

Or if you want to fix up that bunged up K31 stock, take a look here and this will give directions on fixing it up as a sporter.

My consideration of the best buy in current offerings would be the 24/47 which most places such as Classic Arms have for $119.95.Every one of these that I have observed and shot has great wood finish,a wonderful bore and are very accurate. One major factor is that 8MM ammunition is available reasonably and in good variation of bullet weights.
The K31 is accurate and has a very nice trigger but the ammunition is so doggone expensive.

That scope on the one they did with a factory stock seems pretty darn high as long as he went through all of that he should have added a piece to the top of the stock.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
