What's more accurate?
« on: November 15, 2006, 12:57:21 PM »
All things being equal, same bullet, same rifle, etc...  Which round has the best potential for accuracy between the 300 Winchester and the 300 Weatherby and why?

thanks

Unless you're shooting in benchrest matches with $10,000 custom benchrest guns, the entire notion that one cartrige is more accurate then another is complete hogwash. Just about anything you can name that relates tthe construction and engeneering of a modern bolt action rifle will have more of an effect a rifles accuracy/innaccuracy than the chambering.

BUT for the non handloader the 300 win mag offers more choices in factory loaded match quality ammunition.

I agree with the other poster, for hunting guns it would all depend on the individual rifle and shooter...

Depends on the individual rifles, even if they are the "same".  Or more correctly, perhaps, especially if they are the "same".

I'm gonna stick my neck out and say the .300Win can be worked into a more accurate rifle solely because of the long run the Weatherby cartridge makes before engaging the lands.  BUT, I'll be the first to say that bullet jump is NOT the do-all, be-all, end-all of accuracy.
I have no hands on experience with a Weatherby however.  I have owned 3 300Winnies over the years and they have all been gratifyingly accurate. All Model 700s and they would shoot 200gr Grand Slams, NP's, and 200gr Speer Hot Cores into 1"-1.25".  That was with scopes on the order of 1.5x5's and 2x7's.
Again, this is not a knock against the Weatherbys but rather a boost for the .300Winnie.

Got to agree with krochus. That being said,I've owned a couple 300wins,and worked up loads for a couple 300 weatherbys. All said and done couldn't tell the difference accuracy wise between the two,as best loads for either were right at 3/4',they are both accurate.I always chose the 300 winchester because, and keep in mind this was years ago,the winchester was offered in more rifles, and factory cartridges were cheaper although not a consideration for me as I reloaded only, but brass was also cheaper for the winchester.

What year did that occur? Certainly not this year.
