Conical bullet lubing
« on: November 16, 2006, 06:33:10 AM »
When lubing, do most people (like me) merely slop enough on that the grooves are filled? Do some of you pan lube with whatever?

I've wondered about pan lubing, and making a cake cutter for my .50 from a spent .50 AE case.

I have just dipped in the melted lube to cover the grooves and set to dry on waxed paper or plastic wrap. I have also taken the bare conical and used my fingers to form the lube on the conical letting the heat of my fingers form the lube in the grooves.  My lube is 50% beeswax 40% Crisco and 10% Soybean oil. (cooking oil)

I've pan lubed, it's slower'n usin' a lubrisizer, but heck, firepower ain't the point of muzzleloadin'.  ;)

What I've done so far is to use bore butter and fill the grooves as best I can.
This seems to work okay on shallow grooves, but not so well on the larger Maxi-Ball size grooves.
(I know they come lubed, but I've got some old ones from a deal I fell into, and the lube is dry and falling out.)

I'm about to try some R.E.A.L. bullets next, and I figure to lube these shallow grooves by hand.

I do have a new Lyman 4500 lubri-sizer, but I didn't think it was possible to run something as large as a .50 or .54 caliber through them.
Is it possible to use the Lyman to size something that large?

The Ideal and Lyman lubrisizer unfortunately size the entire bullet to one diameter.  The purpose of the R.E.A.L. Bullet was to have different diameter rings around the bullet which are to be engraved into the rifling upon being seated in the muzzle.    Rifling Engraved At Loading. (or something like that) hence the name.  The last, top band around the bullet is intentionally larger than the other bands.  To size them in a Lubrisizer would defeat the purpose and make all the bands uniform.

Lastly, sizing in a lubrisizer is good only if the bullet is sized properly for the intended bore and rifling.  Yes you can get a 50 cal die, (for 50-70 and 50-90,) but it is likely to be too large for a 50 cal muzzleloader.  Dipping the bullets in melted lube and allowing to dry or smearing the lube on with the fingers is about the best.  Unless you are takng part in a battle, how many bullets do you need in one day or week anyway.

I shoot 450 grain minnies in a Zouave, for hunting.  Ten bullets for sighting and three or four for the hunt and thats it.    (Most of the time I shoot patched ball)

Yea I have made a lube that was bore butter and bees wax. To be honest with ya bore butter is nothing but a fancy form of crisco or shortning. I do not buy it anymore.

I started making REAL bullets.  I'm lubing with beeswax/oliveoil mix.  After cooling the wax mix,  I take a piece and roll it into a little tube between my fngers.  Wrap and press the tube of wax into the grooves.  I then use a rolled-up playing card to trim the excess off the bullet.

Someone on here suggested it and it works great.

I found that lubing and trimming one at a time gives the best coverage.  It's slower but it trims easier while it's still warm from rolling.

I have read that Lee Liquid Alox does not mix well with black powder as it has petrolium products in it. I I also have read that Lee supports this theory and does not reccomend the Liquid Alox with Black Powder.

Pedersoli makes a bullet greaser, with replacable inserts for the caliber of your choice. For instance if you wanted to lube 50 cal. R. E. A. L. s you'd get a .504" insert. Check out thier website for details, under professional accessories.  ;)

Apart from the foot, I'd expect to get the same treatment from a rock lock, regardless of what projectile I loaded.  :D

I contacted Lee  Precision they do recomend Liquid Allox for lubing muzzloading bullets.  I have not had any problems.  Some people prefer bore butter which can also cause build up.  I just get a lot less leading with liquid alox.

It gets pretty hot down here in East Texas I use a mixture of Beeswax and Olive Oil.  Sort of heavy on the beeswax.  I cast the 320 grain .50 caliber REAL bullet.  The dip method is easiest for me.  Just dip the bullet into the melted lube mixture.  As someone else said, let it dry on waxed paper.  Then, holding the bullet, I rub the lube off the bottom using a blue paper shop towel that's held down on the countertop.

I thought y'all might like to see this REAL bullet that I recovered after discharging it with a CO2 discharger.

While liquid Alox may not recommended for black powder if it is used with a replacement powder such as Pyrodex, which essentially is a smokeless powder with a smoke agent added, it should be OK?

alox is not a good idea  the reason for the lube to start with is to help  keep the leading down and to keep the fouling  soft 50/50  bees wax and crisco  pan lube  made a cooke cutterworks great
never to much gun
