45.70 bullet seating depth
« on: November 16, 2006, 01:55:04 PM »
I just recieved my 45.70 barrel from the factory :D  In anticipation I loaded some different loads to be ready.  When I chamber the rounds, which are 2.55 oal they either stick or the bullets are pushed back into the shell to 2.535 oal.  There are also marks on the bullets where they have wedged in the lands.  Are the chambers in the 45.70 handi's usually short?  Anyone else experienced this? Do you think that I may have to send it back in? :'(  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

.45-70 H&Rs are notoriously short throated, just as most other calibers are long throated! You should be able to load 300gr bullets to 2.55" and the 350gr Hornady RN, but most other 350gr and bigger bullets won't load to 2.55. I throated all of mine with a rented throater from 4D reamer rentals to solve the problem.

Quick, Thanks for the reply! I am going to order a throater, I would like to be able to load to the standard length, especially since the wife just had me order my christmas present, a Marlin 1895GS in, you guesed it, 45/70! ;D
Also I want to thank all of you ( I think) for all the wonderful informationand experiencesthat you have shared.  Since I found this site a couple of months ago I have been bitten by the bug and have bought- 25.06 ultra, .270 ultra comp, 12 gauge USH, and purchased the 45.70 barrel and I am having a ton of fun!!!
Thanks again!

Congrats on becoming a Handiholic!! FWIW, the 1895 won't have the same short throat as the H&Rs do, so no worry there.

I contemplated an XLR in .45-70, but I already have a BLR in 308Win, so I didn't.........yet!!! ::)
