358 Winchester deer bullets.
« on: November 16, 2006, 02:43:23 PM »
I just bought a Browning BLR, an older model in 358 and would like some advice on good deer bullets for use out to maybe 225 yards. I would prefer a pointed bullet in the 200 to 225 grain range and want to have at least 2400 feet per second. I am considering the Hornady Spire point or Remington corelokt in the 200 grain weight. Anyone with any preferences or experiences?

I like the Nosler 225 BT and know it works well on deer from experience.

I saw my monster buck last weekend at the lease, a huge 12 point that did not offer me a shot though I did not spook him. The 358 hasn't been scoped yet and I have no idea if the irons are sighted in or not so the 358 stays home. My tried and true 270 and 7x57 will make the trip this weekend but the 358 will be scoped as soon as I can find a base for it I'll buy a can of powder that gives the highest velocities (suggestions?) with the 225 grain bullets and after a good sighting in the BLR will become my truck gun. What a handy rifle. I shot it twice with some 200 grain Silvertip factory loads and recoil was hardly an issue. The rifle will definitly get to fill a doe tag or two and then a hog or three this year.

Take a look at AA2520 and maybe Varget.

I just got back from the lease. The rut is in it's beginning stages with the younger bucks doing a lot of chasing. I saw at least 20 bucks that were 8 pointers with one being a very large 8. Might regret letting him walk but I hope not. I saw many smaller bucks though some were surely the same deer just seen again. The does were very skittish, I saw maybe 30 ot them. No hogs or turkeys at all.

I use the Hornady 200 grain spirepoint in my whelen.  I am getting 2600 fps over the chronograph.  It is effective on deer and ruins little meat.  I believe that this bullet would also work just fine at the slightly slower velicities of the .358 winchester.

After searching the net for thoughts on bullets it appears that most bullets work well at the 358 velocities. High marks for all except the 200 grain PSPCL, some say it is too toughly constructed. The Speer flat points in both 180 and 220 grain are highly praised.

Well more net searching finds the 225 Ballistic tip too long to use without clipping its point, The Sierra 225 is generally out of stock. As a matter of fact the most commonly available bullets are made for the 35 Remington. I ordered some 200 grain RNCL's and found some 200 grain Hornady spire points, the only pointed 35 caliber bullets I have found on a shelf. In fact in a large gunshow and 3 gunshops I found 5 boxes of component 35's total. I have some others ordered but did get the rifle scoped and sighted in for the factory Silvertip today. I am sure it will handle duty till I get the Hornady's loaded.
