45-70 bullet?
« on: November 16, 2006, 03:13:07 PM »
I just traded for a 15" 45-70 encore barrel w/mb. I was wondering what bullet is the best for deer. I was thinking about the remington 300gr sp or maybe the new hornady lever bullet. Or would a 300gr , 405gr cast bullet be good. I'm ging to start out with Varget, h4895, IMR3031 thats the three powders I have on hand right now. I dont want any loads that have to much recoil to start with but good enough to make a clean kill out to 100-125yrds.

All of the bullets you mentioned will work for deer, try them all and see which one gives you the best accuracy and use it.

On my TC w/break I shoot the Sierra 300 JHP. I tried the Hornady and Barnes but the Sierra shot best for me. I use IMR 4198, 37 grns. and a Fed 210 primer. This shoots about 2" at 100 yds and runs 1405fps from my barrel. I have taken two whitetail and one hog with this load and all have been bang/flop.
This is a mild load in my barrel and I also shoot it to play with in my 45-70 Sharps to let others get the feel of the 45-70.
I didn't try IMR4895 or Varget in my 45-70 after settling on this load but I'm sure they will work. I use Varget for about 75% of all my calibers with great results.
Good luck and enjoy.
