30-06 150 grn loads?
« on: November 17, 2006, 02:23:28 AM »
this year i developed a new load for my sons 06 that showed a lot of promise. it was extremely accurate out of a browning bbr bolt rifle at all ranges out to 300 yrds. the load is a 150 grn hornady over 52 grn of 4064. my book showed it should travel around 3000fps. however we killed 2 bucks with it this week and it did not exit on either of them. both were shot at about 100yrds and both died within 30 yrds of where they stood.one bullet i recovered went in a little far back on the ribcage on what was a broadside shot, seemed to dflect when it went thru the ribs and was found under the skin on the opposite side flank. expansion was perfect and bullet still weighed 120 grns. 2nd deer was shot in the center of the shoulder as he was qaurtering slightly to my  left and comeing towards me. i didnt recover this bullet and found no sign it ever contacted the opposite side of the body cavity.am i pushing this bullet to fast? or too slow?i am concerned over the lack of pass tru as neither left much blood trail if we had needed to track them.im looking for a load for this rifle i can depend on to perform on good shots and mediocre shots as it is my 11 yr old sons favorite weapon for deer. he shoots it well in practice and likes to shoot it a lot. i would hate to have to go to a premium type expensive bullet unless i have too.im also interested in what yuall are useing under the 150 grn horn bullet and what speeds you are pushing it to get good performance.

Hillbill,       I have been loading 52grains of 4060 for my 30-06 for years and using it for white tails and mule deer.(even a coyote that steps in to the picture every now and then)it has worked like the hammer of Thor on all that it has hit.and seems to work with any 150 grain bullet.
I found the best bullet for MY use was the 150 grain nosler ballistic tip bullet.was very accurate and loaded with shocking power if that is the correct thing to say.The bullets never exited the deer.but dumped all it energy in the deer.which if think is good.Heck I don't think you can get a better LOAD then what you have.but who knows,it fun try try differnt things.Tell that young boy  Hello for me.and to enjoy his time with dad..
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

I've been using a 150 grain Nosler ballistic tip with 59.0 grains of IMR 4350 for many years with good results. This is a maximum load, so you should work your load up from a lower setting. This bullet will drop a deer fast, but the downside of it is, it damages a lot of venison especially on the exit side. I like using this load combination because I like to hunt just before dark in the afternoon and don't want to track a deer after dark, so this load works for me as it drops them in their tracks. This bullet is not a good choice for angling or stovepipe shots, but under normal conditions where the deer presents a good shot, it works great. If you do plan on going to a premium bullet, I would suggest the Nosler Partition.

I have used the 150gr hornady, kind of so so for me.Great accuracy wise but had a couple deer run farther then any other bullet I've used. Now the 165gr hornady is one of my favorites even on large deer and mule deer.I switched to the 150gr nosler partitions for all my 30cal needs and they are great.

thanks guys for the reassurance, im still a little shy of the load because of the lack of pass thru. normally im a .243 man and have shot dozens of deer with the rem 100 grn load and never failed to have a pass thru at any angle. a little update on the second buck i mentioned, when i skinned him yesterday morn, i found the bullet in the hide just forward of the right hip. this would correspond with the angle and the entrance in the shoulder. this was a very large deer and in retrospect it passed thru about 4 ft of deer getting where it got.normally i hold out for a broadside shot or pass it up but this deer was the biggest ive ever seen in the wild and he wasnt getting away.i may explore some other bullet options but id like to stay with the 150 grn. thanks guys for your advice!wade.

I have killed several deer in the last two years with a Browning A-Bolt .30-06. I use Nosler Accubond 150 grain bullets. Last year I loaded 52.0 grains of IMR-4064. This year I had more RL-19 around, so I worked up a load with 61.5 grains. Both loads will group .7" or so for three shots. I have had complete pass-throughs with both loads. Both of these loads are max according the Nosler guide, but showed no preesure signs in my rifle.
Good luck,
Will

i may look into the nosler, if i could find a premium bullet that shot close to same poa as the horn then i could use the horn for practice and the premium for hunting.that may be my goal for next deer season, plenty of time to do it in tho. happy huntin guys!
