What bullet wt. shoots best (accuracy) in a 98k or M48,  Since the German military rd. was I think 196gr. is the issue barrell set up to shoot that length bullet best.  Although I just bought some Yugo stuff that is 154gr. 
Or like everything else "just depends"

All of my 8mm's seem to like the heavier bullets.  I reload for all of my 8mm's and so far they like the 195 gr. bullets better than they like the 185 gr. bullets, but we are talking about reloading here so maybe I just haven't got the combination for the 185 gr. bullets worked out yet. 

As far as mil-surplus ammo goes my 8mm's really like the Yugoslavian 70's production ammo.  I don't remember for sure what grain bullet it is but I am thinking around 190's something.  I Can't find any more of it though.

I've only used 196 gr (70's Yugo and S&B SPCE) in my m48, k98, and Husqvarna sporter.  They all love it.
This really means nothing though, as your rifle may absolutely love the 154 and nothing else

I like to shoot cast bullets in my Vz-24 Check rifle. I use the Lee #90274 mold which drops the bullet at about 175 grains usings wheelweights. This RN bullet shoots real well with IMR-4895 pushing it. This is a real nice low-cost option and with a moderate charge of around 25-26 grains you get good velocity with low pressures. My rifle is in real good shape but many may need to us caution in loading. Because I can get less than 3" groups all day long at 100 yds, I would even try mine on whitetails at moderate distances. I installed a nice williams receiver sight on it and it shoots nice. 

I don't know many 8mm surplus rifles that are tack drivers but they are fun to shoot.  I bought a low cost slip-on recoil pad which softens that steel butt plate a little.  The 8mm is not dead.  Have fun!

I have been shooting 220 grain Remington bullets in my 98k. Bought 200 for 10 bucks so why not. They shoot with great accuracy and recoil. The 200 grain may be the best choice, as accurate with less recoil.

The military 7.9x57JS cartridge was loaded with a 0.323" diameter bullet of 154 grains weight.  The "heavy" bullets were of 0.318" diameter and 226 grains in weight.  Military K98 rifles made after 1905 used the smaller bore and lighter bullets.  The 196-grain bullet was popularized by that bullet being loaded by Norma in high pressure sporting loadings not available from US manufacturers.

The relatively tight twist of the 7.9mm cartridge - usually listed as 1-in-9.25" - allows it to shoot long heavy bullets well.  For hunting use, most current bullets over 170 grains are made with tough jackets and cores for use in the 8mm Magnum.  They may prove a bit too tough for deer at 8x57 velocities.

I don't know many 8mm surplus rifles that are tack drivers but they are fun to shoot. 

It don't get much better than this.  My K98 and reloads at 100 yards.

Mine like the heavy bullets.  My Yugo 48A and Husky 98 shoot incredibly well with S&B 196 gn ball and Hornaday 195 and Nosler 200 gn Accubonds.  The Hornadays and Noslers both give me groups identical to jack19512's group.  Interesting though is that all my 8s except the Husky like the S&B 196 gn cutted edge bullet - the Husky throws them.  But she sure does like those heavy reloads and that's what I will hunt with.  Mikey.
