New(to me) .223 Rossi single shot

 After being a confirmed NEF Handi holic for the past five years or so I bought a Rossi .223 single shot yesterday.I posted comments on comparison of it and my Handi's on the NEF section but Brett suggested I also post some comments here.
I'm very suitably impressed with the fit ,finish and general appearance and construction of the rifle.I have yet to get it to the range but that will change within the very near future.This particular one was purchased very slightly used by me and is fitted with the scope rail and a nice Simmons 3X9X40.
I was surprised to find a safety on the left side.Having a transfer bar I consider a safety on a hammer gun quite ridiculous but it is there.
Any of you Rossi owners who have a similar rifle can be of inestimable help to me in giving your comments on these rifles as far as accuracy,reliability and anything else.Thanks in advance for your comments

Stan, Let me know how it shoots. Thinking of getting one of the heavy barrel .223 when Dick's puts them on sale again. Thanks.

I own a Rossi 30-06 and after I changed scopes on it, it seemed to be fairly accurate within a 1 " group at 100 yds. :)

How much were they when they were on sale?  Gander Mt has them for $143 or something like that

Dick's Sporting Goods here in South Carolina had an advertised special for the Rossi.It was the receiver with a .22 long rifle barrel,20 Gauge barrel and a .243 barrel for $169.95.
I still have not gotten to the range with my Rossi .223 but will be able to do so after all of the hullabaloo of Thanksgiving is done.

I finally got a chance to go to the range yesterday with the Rossi .223 albeit the trip was kinda rushed.Two of my friends and I were going deer hunting in the afternoon and one of them had to be sure his rifle was zeroed.I took the opportunity to shoot a few rounds from the Rossi.
Using Wolf ammunition and some mixed Remington and Winchester I got the scope zeroed after a fashion at 100 yards.I say after a fashion because the different manufacture rounds impacted at different points of impact which is to be expected.This was messing up my zeroing attempts somewhat.I did get a final three shot group of about 2 inches.
I'll standardize on one type of ammunition and take another range trip to really get it shooting correctly.
I found the .223 to be an ultra pleasure to shoot with it's nonexistent recoil.The rifle itself performed flawlessly and I am impressed with it.I shot it enough and often enough to get the barrel rather warm but experienced no stringing of the group.
A further range trip is looked forward to.I had no previous experience with the .223 round and am really quite enthused with it.Further trip results will be posted.
Any comments or experiences with the Rossi or the Rossi in .223 will be appreciated.

Stan , I just got a new one for Christmas , I have only shot it a few times but it does seem pretty accurate considering I was just shooting with open sights , if you do anymore shooting with the rifle let us know how she shoots and what type of ammo she likes best

My Rossi BB 223 shoots 1/2" groups with Winchester WB 45's............

Well here it is two months to the day later and I took the Rossi .223 to the range again.I sighted it in really well with Remington 55Gr.and was getting 1" groups consistently at 100 yards.I think this is a neat little rifle.
I happened to have some Wolf .223 ammunition with me and was curious as to how it shot in relation to the Remington.The Wolf shot really high and right consistently but would not group well.The spread was about 4".
I went right back to the Remington and shot a 4 shot 1" group dead in the bull.Deduction is that Wolf ammo is crap.

This .223 Rossi is really growing on me and rapidly becoming one of my favorite shooters.I had sighted it in initially with Remington 55Gr. soft points and recently had a chance to purchase some Remington/UMC 55Gr. FMJ at a good price.I went to the range yesterday and took the rifle to see if the FMJ shot to any different point of impact than the soft points.It shot the usual 1" group with both so I now feel confident of no change in zero for whichever of the two loads I shoot.
I like the extractor on the rifle and have had not even one instance of stuck shells.
Also I notice if I get the rifle warm from shooting there is no stringing of shots like some other rifles.
All in all I'm definitely satisfied with the rifle.

my cousin just got his new hb 223 we ran 20 55gr mc remington thur it  looks like it will be a good shooter also nice wood fair trigger he put a 3x9 nikon buckmasters on it we ran out of ammo we are going to reload we never reloaded 223 would like know what powder and bullets work for it (223) i hadn't heard much about rossi but this gun right now seem to be worth the money and we order some ammuntion from wisconsin cartiage company they have some good prices on ammo hope to have a load worked up in a few weeks will update on results

Reloading . . . I like H4198 the best (work up to about 21.5 gr) with 55 gr. Hornady or Speer spitzer seated out as close to the rifling as possible. I've tried Varget and RL15 and H4895 and X-Terminator too, and they were all OK with X_terminator and RL15 and 4895 working better than Varget for me. I really enjoy shooting my Rossi .223. Single shots seem to slow things down and make a day at the range exceptional.

I just got a Rossi .223 from Gander Mountain last week. Shot it with open sights at 25 yards and was really impressed. Got a scope on it and went through a 50 round box of Black Hills 55 gr FMJ. I am very impressed with this rifle. Got the barrel really hot and was shooting in 1 inch groups at 100 yards. The recoil isn't bad at all. I went for more ammo yesterday and all I could find was Winchester 55 gr FMJ. The trigger is stock, but pretty smooth. I am going to get a trigger job on it.  ;D

Gday from south australia. we are just getting rossi matched pairs here and  I purchased one before CHRISTmas. mine is .223/12 guage. having bad stringing problem with .223. at 50 yards with several different brands of factory ammo the consistent pattern is 5-6inch drop of poi from first to 6th shot. I have rather high scope mounts on it and wonder if that is making the problem more pronounced? it has gone back to the gunshop now, and they are going to try some barrel bedding, but its not so easy when its a matched pair. I tried bedding the very front of the forestock before sending it back. raised the poi 6 inches at 25 yards and did impove strining slightly but still 3 inches at 25! tried shooting it with forestock removed and made no difference at all. I am wondering if the little socket weld on the barrel has not been stress relieved or normalised after welding or something? Seems that others with standard barrel on this site are ok for stringing. I wonder if there is any difference between forestock fit on matched pair and straight single barrel guns? Help! 6" drop at 50 is no good for me I want to be shooting foxes, rabbits and roos out to 250!

I don't have one of the combo sets but my .223 is one of the heavy barrels.  I have not had any of the problems with it.  It will hit a grapefruit sized target consistently at 200 yards with the cheap Winchester ammo and do better with hand loads.  I also have a NEF in the .243 Winchester and have had it longer than the 223.  When I began reloading for it I found that the head spacing was very important to accuracy.  At first I tried just neck sizing and had varying degrees of lock-up difficulties and experienced stringing.  When I full length sized the cases to bump the shoulder back slightly I began shooting well.  I know you said your problems were with factory ammo, so the cartridge dimensions should be about the same.  I have read about some of the Rossi calibers having a problem with head space, it seems the 243 is worst.  Sorry I don't have a definite answer for you but I think I would check the consistency of the lock-up and the chamber dimensions first.

update on 223 hb  rossi from 04/30/2007 we never did get it to shoot like we wanted he traded it for savage mo 10 in 223 and it has been great the rossi was still ok for what he paid thanks

Stopped into Dicks Sporting Goods and seen the Rossi R223PHB on sale. Rifle came with 6-24x50mm scope, rings,and Plano Protector hardcase at $250. Mounted a 36x44mm target scope on it instead. Try to shoot it this weekend. Hope this was a good impulse buy  RonS

Skammy,you may want to try free floating the barrel,adding an O ring on the barrel lug and fully resize your brass if you are using reloads. I have a 223 in a standard barrel and I was having difficulty in getting good groups.After the above modifications, the gun now shoots 1MOA or less.

rons  I bought a package just like that,I can't figure out who made the scope........any ideas?

 stan in SC Iv'e had mine now 3 years,not a single problem with it.Its very accurate but I do hand load for it.

gooser, I asked the guys at Dick's if they had any idea what the 6-24x50 scope brand was and they didn't know. I know that they were using Simmons scopes on alot of promos. The scope looks like a Tasco scope that I have. I didn't put the 6-24x50mm on my Rossi. I had a 36x44mm Truglo target scope and put it on, see the photo. Haven't had a chance to shoot the 223 yet, been working alot of overtime.  RonS

rons thanks for your answer,I even wrote to rossi and asked but didn't get a reply...... ??? It does look like a tasco though. I use mine but at 24x it gets pretty blurry,the AO seems to work ok.
