7600 accuracy ?
« on: November 18, 2006, 06:01:27 AM »
I have a 270 that will shoot 30 yd 1 hole groups. At 50 it moves to the right about 2 1/2" and opens up and down 2". At 80 it is 8" right and 8" high and about 2 open. Bore looks good with lite and I don't find anything wrong at the crown of the barrel.   ???? any suggestions.

Is the barrel tight?  I was a bit young when this happened, but I remember my .243 going all sorts of screwy.  There is a nut of sorts under the slide that tightens the barrel.  The gunsmith tightened it up and it's been a tackdriver ever since.

Could be loose scope screws, bad scope....

I have a 7600. It had accuracy problems until I got after the copper. It copper fouls faster than any other gun I have. Once I used Wipe Out, by the second shot, it was shooting very nicely again, sub MOA. Until then, I'd have holes all over the paper. Bore looked good as well but apparently, it just needed a really good, deep cleaning.

Have a new one with plastic stock in 308.  It shoots 1.5 with Remingtion factory 150gr. loads and 1 inch with my reloads.  So far I am pleased with it.

I have a 30/06  760 that is about 25 years old that will hold a 1 1/2 at 100 with factoryloads.  Finally changed the scope rings and sand bag postions on the 270 and got it to about 3" at 100.
Thanks shermbob

Shermanbob:  You never provided any details regarding the scope on your rifle.  Back in the early 60’s I bought a cheap Jap scope with hard earned haying money at the local sporting goods store.  Parallax was a problem.  Any movement of my head moved the cross hairs and point of impact.  At 100-yards a slight movement of my head would move the cross hairs 6-8 inches on the target.  I returned the scope and was given another cheap Jap scope.  It was only slightly better.  I returned the scope and bought a used Weaver scope.  That solved the problem.

But the problem resurfaced.  When I left home I told my Dad that he could have the scope.  When Dad was to old to hunt he gave us boys his deer rifles.  I was surprised to find that old Jap scope on the rifle I received.  When I replaced it with a Bushnell Banner 3x9(Modern Japanese manufacture) the accuracy of the rifle greatly improved. The old scope went into the garbage.

Copper fouling was mention as a possible cause.  At one time I thought I was getting all the copper fouling out of my bore.  I could hold the rifle up and look down a nice shinny bore.  And I felt good because it was clean.  But I was only getting part of the copper fouling and fooling myself.  One day I held a shop light so I could see inside the muzzle at an angle.  My nice shinny bore was coated with copper.

I have used all kinds of bore cleaners to remove copper from my rifles.  Some of them stink so bad that I am required to wash my clothing immediately and hit the shower.  I have found the Remington Bore Cleaner in the plastic bottle to be very effective and does not stink.

Years ago I found that my M760 likes slow burning power which fills the case.  The answer was H4831, WW785, or IMR4350.  My groups shrunk up.

One year after the season I got a real good deal and bought a number of boxes of WW 150-grain power points.  My brother had good results with Power Points in his M760.  In mine the groups grew.  A few years later I tried them in a Remington 700 and found them to be very accurate and effective on deer.  I now hoard that ammunition for use in the M700.  The point is to try different ammunition.  If you do not load try the Hornaday Light Magnum or Federal High Energy loads.  Unlike the cheap ammunition the powder charge in these loads are high density.  Normally high-density loads provide better accuracy then standard factory loads.
