Is the Encore right for testing an obsolete caliber?
« on: November 19, 2006, 01:33:50 AM »
Hello all,
This is my first post on the forum and I have a question! Well some background first: First off a disclaimer: I am totally new to the Thompson Center line of hanguns and rifles so please forgive any ignorant/silly mistakes I might make! My experience with shooting has usually involved a magazine, a bolt and a moving action so learning about the single shot thompson center line has opened my eyes to a whole new world!

I have been looking into creating a rifle chambered in the experimental British .280/30 (7x43) cartridge  which was designed for the em-2 assault rifle. Unfortunately it seems that all that is left these days is a few rounds of ammunition - I have thus far found no rifles, no empty brass, no barrels let alone a reamer. I have found someone who will load new ammunition provided I supply a chamber casting and bolt face dimensions but looks like I will have to build a rifle from scratch if I ever am able to locate a reamer.

Well onto the question: Would the Encore make a good test platform for my purposes? I am drawn to the "quick change" barrel capablity of the encore and think it would make it much easier for tweaking the ammunition. Is it a safe platform to test on? Any hints/ tips for a new, most likely soon to be owner of an encore rifle?

Regardless, the ablity to quickly change from .223 to 6.8 to .308 seems mightly appealing to me! Whoever thought up of this rifle was a genius!

Thank you for your time, I appreciate any comments you might have!

There is an outfit in N.H. that uses EDM to cut chambers so no reamer is needed. I will eventually think of their name but maybe somebody else knows to whom I'm referring.  They can cut a chamber off of you 3 rounds of loaded ammo.  They can also make dies but I don't know if they have the ability to harden the dies.  Don't expect to do this cheaply, but it can be done!!
The Encore is a great platform to experimrnt on w/ a wildcat.  Encores will handle higher pressures than a Contender.  The Encore is good up to a .535" headsize at 50-52000 CUP.  If you go larger (Rigby or Short Mags) you have to drop the pressure.
