What is a 30-30 good for, absolutely nothing.  Oh except for carrying all day without wearing you out, coming to the shoulder like it is part of you, and filling the freezer with tasty cuts of meat.  Oh and keeping varmints out of the cattle and barn, Oh and if needed keeping the two legged varmints from causing problems.  What is the 30-30 not good for except long range shooting.  Someone hit it right on the head, the 30-30 doesn't get a lot of praise in gun magazines and such because it is not glamorous, the basic rifle doesn't cost 1500 dollars, the ammuniton is not 40 dollars a box and it doesn't kick you silly or detach your retinas when you fire it.  It just does what it does with the reliability of the sun rising and has been doing it for over 100 years.  I wonder how many of the new wonder cartridges will still be around 100 years from now.  I bet if there are still cartridge arms, the 30-30 and several of the other old standards will be.

I have an old 336 that I bought back in 1966,I have shot I don't know how many deer with it.I took the scope off that I had on it and installed a williams reciever/fire set and it works great, easy to see untill its too dark to see anymore.I always aim for the shoulder, use 170 grain core-loks,I've never had to track one very far yet, most all go down right where they are hit.I've shot other deer right in the heart with a 270 and 30-06 and had to track them.I wound up selling my other guns and kept my thuty-thuty.never will get rid of it.

A couple years back a friend of mine started using a 94 in .30-30 to hunt elk. He said the others in his group laughed when he pulled out the rifle but he's bagged an elk the last 3 years with one shot each. He also hunts in timber with all shots well under 75 yards.
