Removing the butt stock

I'm new here and went back through previous posts and couldn't find this subject (I'm sure this has been discussed). I'd like to reshape and refinish my handi 45-70, but I can't figure out how to remove the buttstock.
Thanks in advance.

Unscrew the two recoil pad screws and remove pad. Using a 9/16 inch socket with extension( 10 inches approx.) unscrew the butt bolt and you are done.

Welcome to GBO, Dave! It would behoove you to read the FAQ and Help sticky, there's lots of info in there for new and old H&R owners alike, including the stock bolt info.
