17 fireball

It looks like Remington is coming out with a new round called the 17 Remington Fireball. It is a necked down 221 Remington Fireball case pushing a 20gr bullet over 4000 fps.

This round has been around for years in Wildcat circles. It`s called the .17 Mach IV. and has a very big following. Velosity is alittle less than the .17 Rem. which was based on the old .17-223, but is just enough longer that brass for it must be formed from .222 mag. brass, if you want to make your own. I doubt that this .17 Rem. fireball will be on the market for long though as there are so many other rounds on the market that are so close to it. The .17 Rem., the the 204 Ruger and a bunch of .22 cal. rounds. If you get one lay in a good supply of brass jsut incase it`s not around long.

I,ll have to try out the 221 Fireball, years ago I was going to have one made .Hornadys  6th Edition Handbook Of Cartridge Reloading page 76-77 has reloading data for the 17 Mach IV (17-221).   Cases can be formed from the 221 Rem brass. Reloading die sets should be comming out soon.

I don't agree that it will not last long, Basically they took the .17 Mach IV and made it a factory loaded cartridge. You say it has a very big following, (the Mach IV), Then say the 17 Fireball won't last long. I believe what will happen is these wildcatters (yours truly included) will start buying factory brass instead of "forming" .221 Fireball brass to .17 cal. "IF" brass drys up we'll just have to go back to what we've been doing all along. I also don't believe "there are so many rounds so close to it" The .17 Rem is as far as I know is the only factory .17, although there might be an argument for the .17 Cooper. I was once contemplating buying a .17 HRM, now I might just wait and get me a 700 LT varmint, A reloadable 17. A .204 Ruger is in that class, yes, but I don't see where you can campare that "bunch of .22's", compete yes, but 17's are basically in a class by themselves. Where the .17 Fireball will be a most welcome addition. CRASH87

Is the .17 Fireball going to last , or is it going to be like the 7-30 Waters and the .375 Winchester? Here today and gone in 10 years?

I don't know if it will last or not, but I am looking very hard at one..... I think it would be great in a single shot.

And another round that didn't last, the .307 Winchester.

Do you think any other companies besides Remington will chamber the .17 Fireball for their rifles?

T/C already makes Contender barrels in 17 Mach IV.  I'm sure they will continue but they will probably mark the new barrels as 17 Fireball.

Last I heard, the 7-30 Waters was a very popular chambering for the TC Contender.  I had two of them set up as carbines at one time.  One for me and one for my older boy.
