Which Bullet
« on: November 21, 2006, 08:47:39 AM »
Just bought a 9" .223 contender barrel.  Intend to carry it strapped to the handlebars of my snow machine.   What bullet has others had good results with.  I will be using it for Cayotes, Foxes, Lynx, and maybe a Wolf.  My contender carbine will shoot 70gr bullets well, It is the only .223 that I own that will shoot the heavy bullets.  I'm thinking with that short barrel I would do best with 45 to 55gr bullets.  I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't find it with the search feature.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

9" is a little short for .223 remington, however I have had really good luck with the nosler 50 grn ballistic-tip in my 14" barrel.
1/2 " 100yds groups are common and the killing power of this bullet combined with IMR 4198 is impressive. ( I wouldn't use any powder that burns slower than 4198 with a barrel that short.) You didn't say who made your barrel, with a 9" length I wouldn't think it was TC.

    Good luck and good shooting........................Don

I would stick with 50 gr. and under. Unless this is a custom barell, Contenders do not have the twist to do well with anything over 55 gr. The short barrel will do better with light bullets. On my 14" Varget works great. You may want to look at faster burning powders.

Sourdough......

First some facts:
.223 rem. 10" bull barrel of a friend gets right at 2700 fps w/his 50 grn handloads.
.223 rem. 12" Hunter barrel (10 7/8" rifled barrel & 1 1/8" muzzle tamer) of mine gets almost 2800 fps w/same 50 grn handloads.

I've wondered the same thing as you, I thought of trying the Nosler 60 grn Partition, Barnes 53 grn X-bullet, or the Sierra 63 grn semi-spitzer.  They are probably more then needed for a fox or coyote, but the possibility of a wolf means we should go w/a lil' heavier or tougher bullet.  The minimum I would want to use is a good 55 grn spire point bullet.

What do you have.....open sites, scope, red-dot??  Mine wears a Bushnell 2X6 trophy, I like the power range & fine cross hairs.

Keep us posted what load you try, and especially if you bag something w/that set-up!!!

Good hunting,
Del

I have used a number of different bullets in my 10" 223 Contender. I am currently happy with 55 grain Remington SP that I handload. In wet newspaper they penetrate very well and mushroom to double caliber everytime.
