358 Winchester
« on: November 21, 2006, 01:42:49 PM »
I am thinking on getting a Browning BLR in  358 Winchester and so far i have seen alot of places out of stock on 358 brass and winchester factory ammo  seems a little  high priced. Is winchester unprimed brass usually hard to get and if so can i take 308 winchester brass and simply run it through a 358 full length sizing die or is there more to it then that.

It's that simple.  I've resized several different brands for a custom 358 Win built on a Mauser action.  I've found that for some reason I get better results with the Federal brass.  I don't know if it's harder, or has a slightly greater case capacity, but loads which show pressure signs with Winchester brass don't do so with Federal brass. I just shot an eight point  buck last Saturday with a 200 grain Hornady spire point.  Through and through penetration, good blood trail about 40 yards and down.  No ruined meat.   When resizing be sure to use plenty of lube on the inside of the neck to avoid stretching your brass and be careful about pushing back the shoulder.  This works well with both the 358 Winchester and it's mama the 35 Whelen.  There will always be plenty of 308 and 3006 brass, so don't worry.

X2. Whelenman is right. I use once fired military 7.62. I found I need to run it through the 308 small base die because some of it is fired in oversized chambers. Then I run it through the 358 winchester die and check the length. Some need to be shortened the first time. Lots of fun, this caliber. Goos luck and God Bless. Bandito
