Can I get a REALLY heavy barrel???
« on: November 21, 2006, 04:59:13 PM »
Sadly Im more of a planner than a shooter, these days.  I fool my self by coming up with modifications to confound my gunsmiths.  Currently I have a Buffalo Classic being customized by a "secret" smith, ( I promise to share him when it is finished).  I have another BC that I paid too much for when a shop was going out of business and I just couldnt resist.

I just cant leave well enough alone so, Im thinking that Id like to have a HEAVY octagonal barrel made for the second BC.  Has anybody done this?  If its possible Id like to add a tang sight and a globe front with a level.  Then possibly some custom stocks.......

Fred_M had a barrel octogan'd, but it wasn't a BC.  ...other then that, no-one that I know of has.

I plan to either reshape, or have a custom barrel made someday.  8 or 16 sides, with flutes in the flats.

I think I read about Fred's.  I was hoping one of you guys might know a smith that would start from a stub and fit a heavy octogon barrel to the stub, or build one from scratch.  Id really like something atleast 1 inch across 1.25, or 1.5 inches would be even better.......

On a Handi you are limited to the chamber end of 1.112"

An octagon section of 28" for a total of abot 31.5 OAL would weigh 5.591 LBS plus the 3.5" chamber end about 0.70lbs for a toatal of 6.29lbs.  Cal .458"

Distance across flats are 1.025", Dist. across corners 1.109, width of flats 0.425"

Some body is doing stubbing. Dont know who makes octagon barrels in the US. Ron Smith in Canada will make you one for about $450Can cut rifled.

I made my two Octagon Handi Barrels from 24" 223 Handi bull barrels.
