Lubes effect on a hunting load

I have been sandwiching my patch in a paper towel to reduce the lube content (Crisco'd pillow ticking) hoping the remaining lube wouldn't soak into the powder.  Never had a problem but a load may stay downbore for a week or more so I worried the powder charge might become contaminated.  Would a dry patched ball work in the instance?  How about putting a dry patch on the powder before the lubed patch and ball goes down?  Would some manner of wad work?  Should I stop worrying?

I use pillow ticking and T/C yellow goo for lube. I use an Ox Yoke prelubed felt wad between my patched ball and powder. Makes my .50 cal T/C Hawken a lot more accurate by protecting the patch from burn thru and frazzling (or what ever you call it).  Three shot groups went down in size from 3" to one inch at 50 yds. I tried wads punched from leather and cardboard gasket material.  They didn't work. I need to scour some cloth vendors stock for proper felt to make wads from.  To my tightwad way of thinking Ox Yoke wads are pretty expensive for what they are.

I agree. An Ox Yoke Wonder Wad, or Thompson/Center Bore Button, both prelubed, felt wads, over the powder, reduce group size, and protect the powder from contamination from excess lube, either from a patched round ball, or lubed conical. Even though these felt wads are pre lubed, the amount of lube in them is minimal, and won't contaminate the powder charge.

How can you get contamination from the lube on a conical?
I ask because that's what I shoot and have never had a convern until now!

  as the season progresses temperatures can cool down, you may not be used to the trigger pull, creep or lightness.  you may be loading inconsistently, and not catch it if you dont load more often than once a week..  a shot once a week wont keep me in black powder shooting form..  id be asking for trouble if i operated this way, i shoot a flintlock and i like to keep tabs on what is happening with my load, gun, flint setup etc..dave

A 1/2" hole punch and an empty milk or O. J. carton will give you a lot of over powder cards that are impervious to patch lube. Push 'em down the bore with a concave headed jag.  ;)

I wouldn't worry about contamination...I have been shooting flinters over 30 years, never had a problem with...Now, with higher powder chargers you can have patch burn out as mentioned...Then you can use the over powder wad, or just put a little hornets or wasps nesting between powder and patch to prevent...

btw...I lube with SnoSeal...Just lube the side that goes down first and put the ball on unlubed side..
