Final chapter on my FedEx damaged Browning
« on: November 22, 2006, 01:52:33 PM »
Some of you may remember a long thread I started a couple of months ago on using FedEx to ship firearms.  At the time, and based on shipping many firearms without damage, I highly recommended FedEx.  Shortly after starting the thread I had a Browning BPCR damaged in transit by FedEx (stock cracked badly at the wrist).  As the thread evolved, and based on reader feedback I switched to the US Postal Service and their insured Registered Mail, which I now exclusively use.

So what happened to the damaged Browning?  A little history 1st, FedEx damaged the rifle on 7/24.  After finally getting the damaged rifle back and shipping it to Browning on 8/23 for a quote for repairs, I received a full settlement from FedEx on 9/15.  It took Browning 3 months to repair the rifle and I received it today.

The quality of Browning work was excellent.  The fit and finish of the replacement stock is superb and the wood is a higher quality than the original stock, which was very good.  They did an excellent job in matching the new stock to the old forearm.  So I’m happy.

So how will I ship firearms in the future?  I’ll continue to use US Postal Services registered mail when possible, especially when shipping fully assembled rifles.  I will use FedEx for most other rifles.  In the rare case that USPS shipping is not available for delivery of a fully assemble rifle I will use FedEx.  Based on prior experience with UPS damaged firearms and their lousy claim process I don’t plan to ever use them again.

By the way, if you have an FFL and will be shipping a handgun to another FFL, US Postal Service Priority Mail is great, as long as you fill out the necessary form 1508.  The USPS will not accept handguns from non-licensed shippers.
