Burris Signature problem!!
« on: December 07, 2002, 07:45:39 AM »
Hello all!  I just had a question about my Burris Signature 6X-24X and my redent predicament.  When I view with the scope at high power everything is good.  Its just when I kick it down to a lower power that I can see a small crack!  :x   I really have no idea how it got there.  I have never dropped my gun or the scope.  Just got the gun!  The scope is almost a year old.  Is this something that can be repaired without me having to rip open my wallet to pay close to what the scope costs new?  I really dont want to have to buy a new one.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I agree about sending it back to Burris, but I'm not sure about it being a no cost repair.

Burris scopes have a "forever warranty."  As such, let them examine it.  If they determine that the crack resulted from a manufacturer's defect, then they should fix it no charge.  However, if the crack resulted from anyting else, then there is no reason for Burris, or anyone else, to fix it for free.  (Then again, they may suprise you and fix it for free.)

I recently heard that Beretta purchased 100% of Burris.  I don't know how this would affect warranties.

Thanks for the replies!  The forever warranty was one of the reasons I originally bought my Burris.  It really wouldnt bother me if it wasnt a no-cost repair.  I just hope it wont cost me a fortune to get it fixed.  Thats why I posted to maybe see if someone might have encountered the same problem and if someone knew what it might cost to fix it.

my reason for stating no charge repair is same experience with the same scope.  internal lens was cracked, only visible on lower power setting, burris made good on the repair.  i do wonder how beretta will handle things.  dh

Of all the major sellors of scopes Burris has the most checkered record for customer service. Some claim it is great. Most claim is is almost nonexistant. Me I dunno. Never needed it yet so have no personal experience to fall back on. They have more trouble than anyone else with trash in their scopes for some reason. That I have experience with but decided to live with it rather than return it and find out which type experience I'd have.

A few years back when I started on my R700 LSS Mtn. Rifle in .30-06 project gun I thought I'd like to try a Burris Signature 2-8 scope on it in lieu of the Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8 that I felt at the time would be ideal. I contacted one of the largest distributors of Burris products in the nation to get one wholesale since a rep of theirs had written me and offered to sale to me wholesale because of my website. Even tho at the time he got a personal $20 check from Burris for every Burris scope he moved in addition to his salary from the company he worked for as did all others he told me to NOT buy the Burris. He talked me into the Leupold I really felt I wanted to begin with.

Why? He said Burris just plain didn't have customer service. Said scopes often go in and NEVER are found again. Major hassles with getting them to admit they ever got it and to do anything about it. Said they have more scopes at Burris for repairs at any given time than ALL the others combined. His horror stories were unreal.

Needless to say I bought the Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8. I have no regrets as it is truly an outstanding scope. I do now have a Burris Signature 2-8 I purchased directly from Burris for a price you wouldn't believe even if I told you. It is on my Browning LW Hornet rifle and has been a good scope. It does have one of those seemingly ever present pieces of trash in the image that Burris seems famous for. But it is at the edge of the FOV and really is of no consequence to me. I might feel differently if I'd paid retail for it. I use the LW Hornet very little and so haven't used that scope nearly as much as the Leupold on the '06 but I do consider the Leupold the better scope and not because of the trash in the Burris.

Still these days I find myself going to the Bushnell Elite scopes most of the time. Leupold has moved from a strong first place for my personal scopes to second place. I still own a bunch of Leupold scopes and like them a lot and still use them. But I feel the Bushnells are a bit better and for less money. Burris is in third place for me and I still have several of them and still use them especially the 2-7 handgun scopes for their wide FOV.

Just a bit of hopefully not useless even if unsolicted trivia on my personal experiences with these three scope brands.

I really really really hope that they will fix me up!  I would be up to paying a little bit to get it fixed, just as long as I dont have to buy a new scope!

Good luck with their service department. I had a 6 X 18 that I had trouble with and sent it back to them 4 times. Each time I got it back with notes saying they could find nothing wrong with it. I would call the service department and they would assure me if I sent it back, they would make sure it got fixed. After 4 repeats of the same thing, I gave it away. My last Burris.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

let me start by saying i have never owned a burris personally.  i would have bought one but everyone i have looked through seems to have some blur in the fov somewhere usually around the edges.  anyway, last week i got the oppurtunity to use one for whitetail hunting in pa.  shot 2 on opening day through a 6-24 X on a varmint rifle 22-250.  for those counting shots, i took 4 on the first one, 1 on the second one.  first one was running at about 150 yards completely broadside, hit her twice in the ribs, third missed fourth between the ears as she layed down to die.  second deer was standing at 100 yards and one shot to the white patch on the throat.  needless to say, he didnt move.  nice 8 point.  anyway, back to burris, using this scope confirmed my earlier findings.  the optics were fair.  i would pick my 4-16 weaver for better optics than the burris and there was no comparison to any leupold product.  when we shot the rifle the day before season the zero had moved 5 inches to the right from the last time he shot it...2 weeks prior.  surely it must have been bumped very hard but he said he didnt think it was.  around the outside of the fov, the round edge of the inside of the scope looked jagged.  like a real bad machining job.   anyway, bottom line, i wont be buying any burris scopes...ever. now, if your givin one away... :)

I have a Burris Black Diamond 4x-16x-50mm AO on a .300 Win. Mag. and a Burris Black Diamond 3x-12-50mm AO on a .338 Win. Mag.

I have not yet even shot my .300 Win. Mag., so I can't tell you anything about the scope.

On the other hand, I HAVE shot my .338 on a recent hunting trip to Texas.  It is a brand new scope and gun.  I'd say that I shot about two boxes at the range to set in the scope and break-in the barrel.  The adjustments and tracking were precise and accurate, the optics were clear, and reticles remained strong.  My groups with PMC 225 grain Barnes X bullets were about 1" at 100 yards.  I used it to shoot a 150lb hog and the bullet went exactly where I wanted it to go.

I guess that it's too soon to tell, but so far my 3x-12x-50mm Burris Black Diamond scope is excellent with no problems.  I imagine the same will hold true for my 4x-16x-50mm BD.

Again, these scopes are new, only time will tell how they work out.

GB, have you ever heard of Burris having problems with their Black Diamond scopes?  These are supposed to be their top of the line scopes (with the exception of the Mr. T line).

Zachary, don't remember anyone complaining about them yet but they are kinda new.

The two biggest complaints I've seen of Burris is the trash in their scopes which I've experienced first hand too often myself and their poor to nonexixtant customer service when you have a problem. This latter I've not experienced since I've not sent anything back to them yet.

I am not loyal to one particular scope brand.  However, I do buy the better brand scopes on the market; Leupold VXIII,  Burris, Bushnell Elite, Nikon Monarch.
I have the following Burris scopes on these rifles:  Burris 4x16 Black Diamond on a Weatherby 30-378,  4x16 Signature on a Kimber 22-250,  3x9 Fullfield II on a Winchester .308,  and a 4x16 Signature on Remington .223 VSSF.

On one of the 4x16's, the reset to zero on the elevation won't move.  I defaced the knob somewhat trying to rotate it.  However, I consider the the optics to be top notch.  Other than the above problem, has been a good scope.   The Black Diamond has been totally reliable.  The optics are first rate.  Like one of the above posts, it too has a jagged edge on the inside that borders the lens.  It does not interfere with anything, but, for that kind of money,  the inside of the scope should be finished off as well.

Graybeard and some of the other members turned me on to the Bushnell 4200 scopes.  I believe that for the money,  the Bushnell 4200 Elite is one tough scope to beat.  The optics don't seem to take a back seat to any scope at or near the price,  good fit and finish inside and out,  everything WORKS.

While I think Burris makes a decent product,  I believe there is better for the money.
